The Shiko Memorial Cultural Exchange Center is a premier cultural facility located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. The main building, completed in 1891 (Meiji 24), served as the original Fourth High School and is now designated as a National Important Cultural Property. This two-story red-brick structure beautifully preserves the atmosphere of the Meiji and Taisho eras. The facility consists of two primary areas: the 'Shiko Memorial Hall,' which showcases the history of the school, and the 'Ishikawa Modern Literature Museum,' which houses precious archives and artifacts from famous writers associated with Ishikawa.
Originally completed in 1891 as the main building of the Fourth High School, this structure served as a prestigious institution from its opening in 1892 until its closure in 1950. Over the decades, the building has been utilized by the Kanazawa University Faculty of Science, the Kanazawa District Court, and the Ishikawa Prefectural Local Museum. In 1969, its significant architectural value led to its designation as a National Important Cultural Property. Today, it serves as a vital hub for preserving regional history and fostering cultural activities.
The facility offers two distinct exhibition areas. The first is the Shiko Memorial Hall, which displays materials related to the history and traditions of the former Fourth High School. The second is the Ishikawa Modern Literature Museum, which features the works and personal belongings of renowned writers such as Izumi Kyoka, Tokuda Shusei, and Murō Saisei. Additionally, the building hosts unique attractions like a retro-themed shop, allowing visitors to experience the charm of the past in a tangible way.
Please note that entry to the exhibition rooms must be completed by 16:30, one hour before the official closing time. The multipurpose rooms and retro experience areas are available until 21:00. Regardless of the season, the building provides a serene environment to immerse yourself in literature and history. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to the impact of the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, the entire facility is currently closed for safety inspections. Visitors can enjoy a unique cultural experience within a nostalgic setting. 'Retrism,' a retro-themed experience room, allows you to try on authentic Meiji and Taisho-era clothing, such as vintage kimonos and hakama. Near the main entrance, you can also visit 'GATE4,' a retro museum shop where you can purchase original goods inspired by the Shiko school and other charming retro-designed items.
The center is located in a historic area of Kanazawa, situated between Korinbo and Kenrokuen Garden. The surrounding 'Ishikawa Shiko Memorial Park' offers a peaceful green space perfect for a relaxing stroll. It is a popular stop on a sightseeing route that includes Kenrokuen and other historic landmarks in the vicinity.
