Lake Shikako (Shidako-ko) is a beautiful plateau lake located on the slopes of Mt. Tsurumi in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 600 meters. Part of the Aso-Kuju National Park, the lake spans an area of about 90,000m² with a circumference of 2km, offering a rich and abundant natural environment. Historically, it was celebrated as one of the "Three Great Scenic Views of Beppu," and it remains a beloved destination for its peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the sight of swans drifting on the water and colorful koi fish swimming gracefully, creating a truly soothing landscape.
The lake's formation is tied to the geological history of the Mt. T_surumi volcanic area. In the pre-war era, it was highly regarded as a premier scenic spot in Beppu. In the past, the area was a bustling tourism hub, featuring the "Shidako Utopia" amusement park and various national lodging facilities. Today, the area has evolved into a modern destination focused on natural preservation and outdoor recreation, serving as a gateway for camping and nature-based experiences.

The greatest charm of Lake Shikako lies in its silent waters and the lush greenery that surrounds it. The colors of the mountains change beautifully with every season. The presence of swans and koi provides a sense of healing and tranquility to all who visit. Additionally, the lake is connected to Kagurame Lake—a famous spot for irises—via a walking trail, allowing visitors to enjoy a scenic stroll through the mountains. It is the perfect spot for travelers looking to escape daily life and relax in a natural setting.
Lake Shikako reveals a different face in every season. In spring, the landscape is adorned with cherry blossoms, while autumn brings vibrant foliage to the surrounding mountains. We highly recommend visiting during the pleasant spring or autumn months. While daytime activities like strolling and camping are wonderful, please be aware that the temperature drops significantly in the highlands. If you plan to camp or stay overnight, we strongly recommend bringing warm clothing for the chilly mornings and evenings.

The lakeside features the "RECAMP Beppu Shikako" campsite, where you can enjoy barbecues and camping surrounded by untouched nature. This experience offers a unique way to disconnect from the bustle of the city. For those seeking more active adventures, "Forest Adventure Beppu" is also located nearby, providing an excellent environment for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you are quietly gazing at the lake or engaging in active outdoor sports, Lake Shikako offers a deep connection with nature.
The area around the lake is dotted with various natural attractions. Notably, Kagurame Lake, located to the southeast, is famous for its irises and is accessible from Lake Shikako via a walking path. Exploring these nearby lakes and natural spots together allows you to fully experience the rich, high-altitude charm of the Beppu region.

Because the lake is located in a highland area, temperatures tend to be much lower than in the city. Please prepare clothing that can handle temperature changes, such as a light jacket even in summer. If you plan to use the campsite or enjoy a BBQ, we recommend checking your equipment and reservation status in advance. To protect the natural environment, please strictly follow local rules regarding trash disposal and the use of fire.
