The Shiga Kusatsu Road (Nagano side) is a stunning scenic route located near Yamanouchi, Shimotakai District, Nagano Prefecture, traversing high-altitude areas above 1,500 meters. The greatest charm of this route is the magnificent nature and breathtaking views visible from these high elevations. Including the Shiga Kusatsu Pass (elevation 2,172m), which is the highest point of Japan's national highways, the area offers a dynamic landscape surrounded by 2,000-meter-class mountains. Beyond driving, visitors can enjoy a variety of seasonal activities such as hiking, cycling, and skiing.
As part of National Route 292, this route plays a vital role connecting Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. Once a rugged path through the wilderness, it has been developed into a premier sightseeing road beloved by many travelers. A notable landmark is the Shiga Kusatsu Pass; many local hotels even issue a "Certificate of Reaching the Highest Point of Japan's National Roads" to commemorate the journey, highlighting its historical significance as a landmark for both mountaineers and drivers.
The highlight of this route is the area around Shiga Kusatsu Pass at 2,172m. Here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the 2,000-meter-class mountains, including Mount Manza, Mount Yokote, and Mount Shiga. In the spring, shortly after the roads open, you may witness the spectacular "Snow Walls" (Snow Corridors), where snowbanks can reach heights of 7 to 8 meters along the roadside. The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season you visit.
The Shiga Kusatsu Road is characterized by its distinct seasonal beauty. In spring (starting late April), you can see fresh greenery emerging alongside melting snow. In summer, the landscape is filled with vibrant alpine flowers. Autumn brings a stunning palette of red and yellow foliage, making it an ideal season for driving. In winter, the area becomes a hub for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. Please note that the section between the Tenguyama Gate and Yosaka Gate is closed during the winter season from late November to late April.
In addition to driving, there are plenty of ways to connect with nature. From summer to autumn, hiking and cycling in the high-altitude air are highly recommended. In winter, you can take advantage of the nearby ski resorts for skiing and snowboarding. These dynamic natural experiences at high altitude are unique to this route.
There are various rest areas along the route, such as the "Michi-no-Eki Hoshino (North Shinshu Yamanouchi)" on the Nagano side. The route also provides easy access to the Shiga Kogen resort area, making it suitable for longer trips involving overnight stays. If you continue through to the Gunma side, you will find easy access to famous hot spring destinations like Kusatsu Onsen and Manza Onsen.
Because you are traveling at high altitudes, please be aware of temperature fluctuations. Prepare clothing suitable for the season and bring an extra layer even in summer. It is also recommended to check the latest road conditions beforehand, as access can be restricted due to weather or volcanic activity.
