Shiga Kogen Yokoteyama Ski Resort is one of Japan's premier high-altitude resorts, featuring the highest point in Japan at an altitude of 2,307m. Located on the border between Nagano and Gunma Prefectures, it offers a dynamic natural landscape that changes beautifully with the seasons. In winter, it becomes a premier destination for skiing and snowboarding with exceptional powder snow. In summer and autumn, visitors can enjoy a grand panorama of the Northern Alps, Mt. Fuji, and Mt. Due to its high altitude, this area has long been recognized as a vital point for observing natural scenery. The 2,307m mark represents one of the highest points on Japan's road network and serves as a geographical boundary between Nagano and Gunma. The resort's operations are closely synchronized with the natural cycles, with lift services and course availability changing significantly depending on the season.
The greatest attraction is the overwhelming view from the summit. On clear days, you can see the breathtaking panorama of the Nagano Basin below, the majestic Northern Alps, and even Mt. Fuji and Mt. Asama in the far distance. The changing seasonal vegetation and the beauty of the snowscapes at this high altitude are also major draws for visitors. For skiers and snowboarders, the unique conditions provided by the high altitude are a standout feature.
Winter (December–March) is the peak season for snow sports. The period from January to March is particularly famous for its stable, high-quality snow conditions. For the warmer months (May–October), the resort is ideal for scenic sightseeing via lift or nature walks in a cool, high-altitude environment. To maximize your chances of seeing the clear mountain panorama, we recommend visiting in the morning when weather conditions are typically more stable.
Winter activities center around skiing and snowboarding, utilizing the unique terrain and elevation changes. While Yokoteyama and Shiga Kogen's Shibukura area are interconnected, please note that certain sections may require skating or walking due to the topography. In summer and other seasons, you can enjoy sightseeing and hiking via the lifts. Please check the lift operation schedules in advance, as services vary greatly by season.
The resort is part of the expansive Shiga Kogen area. While there are routes connecting Yokoteyama to Kumanoyu Ski Area, please be aware that skiing from the Yokoteyama side toward Kumanoyu is not possible due to the terrain; walking may be required at the lowest points. The base area is well-equipped with parking, dining, accommodation, and first-aid facilities for your convenience.
Because the summit is at 2,307m, temperatures are significantly lower than the ground level and weather can change rapidly. Heavy winter clothing is essential in winter, and even in summer, you should bring layers for the cold. Lift tickets can be purchased near the No. 2 Lift or at the 'Akari' restaurant. Please verify the accepted payment methods (cash, credit cards, or IC cards) on-site. Due to high winds and potential visibility issues at the summit, please ensure you have appropriate safety gear and follow all posted signs.
