Shikajuku Dam is a rock-fill dam located on the Shiroishi River within the Abuma River system in Shikajuku Town, Katata District, Miyagi Prefecture. Standing at a height of 90 meters, it is known as the largest dam in Miyagi Prefecture. The artificial lake formed by the dam is called 'Lake Shikajuku,' and its breathtaking beauty earned it a spot on the '100 Selected Dam Lakes' list by the Dam Water Source Environment Improvement Center. As a vital water source for central Miyagi, including Sendai City, the area represents a perfect harmony between essential infrastructure and natural beauty.
The region has a rich history; its name originates from the existence of seven post stations along the 'Yamanaka Shikajuku Kaido,' an important historical route connecting Oshu and Ushū during the Edo period. The construction of the dam was driven by the need for flood control and water management in the Abuma River system, as the area had a history of suffering from severe typhoon-induced flooding. Today, the dam plays a crucial role in securing water for agriculture and industry in the Sendai Plain. At the on-site 'Museum of Water and History,' visitors can learn about the history of the villages that were submerged during the dam's construction and the evolution of the local community.

The area offers different charms throughout the seasons. In summer (especially around August), the surrounding greenery is lush, making the lake scenery particularly vibrant. In winter, the surrounding area is popular for skiing and snowboarding. Please note the museum's operating hours: until 16:30 from April to November, and until 16:00 from December to March. The facility is closed during the winter period (from late December to the end of February).
Visitors can enjoy walking through the natural surroundings and photography. In late August, the area hosts the 'Walk with Waraji' event, where people walk the historic Shikajuku Kaido wearing traditional straw sandals, offering a unique way to connect with local culture. The scenic backdrop of the dam lake provides an excellent setting for photography.
