SHIBUYA SKY is an observation facility located at the top of the East Tower of 'Shibuya Scramble Square' in Shibuya, Tokyo (occupying the 45th, 46th, and rooftop levels). From a height of 229m above ground, an expansive space unfolds, offering a 360-degree view of the Tokyo cityscape. It is designed not merely as a viewpoint to enjoy the scenery, but as a 'spatial device' with a consistent narrative from entrance to exit, providing an immersive experience that stimulates intellectual curiosity and fosters imagination.
This facility was born as part of the Shibuya Station area redevelopment project. While originally planned as a high-rise building without an observation deck, changes in building standards and urban enhancement plans led to its current form, featuring both indoor and outdoor observation spaces. The design was handled by Nikken Sekkei and Nomura Kogyai Sha, with the production involving the digital artist collective Rhizomatiks. This has resulted in a new form of observation experience where the urban landscape merges seamlessly with digital technology.
SHIBUYA SKY is composed of three main zones. First, the 'SKY GATE' (from the 14th to 45th floors) uses the elevator ride to transition your consciousness from the everyday to the extraordinary. Next, the 'SKY STAGE,' one of Japan's largest rooftop observation spaces, offers an exhilarating experience with the 'SKY EDGE' looking down directly at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and the 'CLOUD HAMMOCK' where you can lie back as if looking up at the sky. Finally, the 'SKY GALLERY,' an indoor observation corridor on the 46th floor, features digital art such as 'TIME RIVER' and 'PARALLEL WINDOWS' using high-definition 4K displays, providing a new perspective by blending with the actual scenery.
You can enjoy completely different expressions of SHIBUYA SKY depending on when you visit. During the day, you can enjoy a clear view of the Tokyo cityscape, with the contrast against a blue sky being particularly breathtaking on sunny days. At dusk, you can experience the dramatic transition as the city lights begin to flicker alongside a beautiful sunset. At night, the 'CROSSING LIGHT' lighting production, featuring 18 searchlights, allows you to enjoy the night view alongside digital light displays. Seasonal events and celestial observation events are also occasionally held.
Beyond just viewing the scenery, you can enjoy interactive experiences using digital technology. In 'TIME RIVER,' you can participate in a visual representation of the flow of time through touchsticks. On the rooftop 'CLOUD HAMMOCK,' you can spend a relaxing time close to the sky. Furthermore, special experiences tailored to specific themes, such as the 'PARADISE SOUND SESSION' which fuses music and lighting, are also available.
SHIBUYA SKY is located in the heart of Shibuya, one of Tokyo's most famous entertainment districts. The Shibuya Scramble Crossing, along with numerous fashion boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, are right in front of you. Being directly connected to Shibuya Station, it is highly accessible for a break during shopping or dining, making it a very convenient base for Tokyo sightseeing.
For safety reasons, large items other than pocket-sized cameras or smartphones are not allowed in the rooftop observation area (SKY STAGE). Please store them in the lockers located on the 46th floor. Additionally, access to the rooftop may be restricted depending on weather conditions such as strong winds. Since the experience is primarily outdoors, appropriate clothing for the season is recommended. It is highly recommended to book tickets in advance, as you may not be allowed entry if you arrive significantly later than your designated time.
