Shibukawa Zoo is a unique wildlife park nestled within the breathtaking scenery of Setonaikai National Park in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture. Spanning a vast area of approximately 30,000 tsubo (about 100,000 square meters), the park is home to roughly 600 animals across 80 different species. A core philosophy of the zoo is "not covering the Earth with a lid," which means instead of paved asphalt, many paths are made of natural soil. This allows visitors to feel the natural wind, hear the rustling of trees, and listen to the songs of wild birds up close. It is a peaceful sanctuary where you don't just observe animals, but truly coexist with the rhythm of nature.
Set within the prestigious Setonaikai National Park, the zoo has a long-standing history of coexistence with the environment. The park recently celebrated significant milestones, including its 90th anniversary in 2024. For decades, it has been cherished as a place to feel the vitality of life. Within the grounds, there is also a memorial stone dedicated to the animals that have lived alongside the park through the years, serving as a place to reflect on the preciousness of life and the bond between humans and nature.
The zoo features a diverse range of animals, including the impressive Aldabra giant tortoise. One of the most popular activities is the direct interaction with animals, such as feeding rabbits, which provides a wonderful experience for children. Depending on the season, the landscape changes beautifully; for instance, in summer, you might spot various insects like beetles among the lush greenery. Another must-see is the Kachi-Kachi Yama Observatory, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea, providing a perfect spot for relaxation.
Every season offers a different charm. Summer is ideal for observing insects and walking through the vibrant, lush greenery. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn beautiful colors, and walking through the fallen leaves provides a serene atmosphere. The zoo is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30), so visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended to see the animals at their most active.

The park features several scenic spots like the "Kachi-Kachi Yama Observatory" and "Yushun no Oka" (Hill of Galloping Horses). These locations are perfect for relaxing or enjoying a picnic. The zoo is also conveniently located near other popular attractions like the Mojoyo Amusement Park (Omocha Teikoku), making it easy to include in a full day of sightseeing.
Because the zoo is a natural environment, many paths consist of dirt and soil. We strongly recommend wearing comfortable, walking-friendly shoes. While strollers are allowed, please be aware that navigating dirt paths may be slightly difficult in certain areas.
