Shibukawa City General Park is a vast recreational area covering 57.2 hectares, situated at an altitude of 600 meters in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture. Established in 1976, the park is designed to harmonize perfectly with its natural surroundings. From this vantage point, you can gaze upon the majestic Mt. Akagi directly in front of you, while the distant Tanigawa mountain range stretches across the horizon. The striking contrast between the deep blue sky and the lush greenery creates a serene and unforgettable landscape.
The park was developed as a symbol of Shibukawa City's commitment to being a 'Healthy City.' Following the establishment of the athletics stadium in April 1976, the facility expanded to include baseball fields, gymnasiums, and tennis courts. Notably, in 1983, the park served as a venue for judo during the Akagi National Sports Festival, highlighting its historical role in supporting regional sports culture. Today, the park is managed under a designated administrator system to ensure high-quality maintenance and operation.
The park offers an ideal environment for nature observation and leisurely strolls. The seasonal blooming of Yoshino cherry blossoms in spring and hydrangeas in early summer are major attractions that draw many visitors. The landscape is a unique blend of nature and art, featuring various sculptures and walking paths where you can listen to the songs of wild birds. The observatory area provides an unobstructed view of the entire Mt. Akagi silhouette and the ridgeline of the Tanigawa mountains.
The scenery transforms beautifully with the seasons. In April, the entire park is bathed in the soft pink hues of cherry blossoms. During the hydrangea season, the lush green environment is punctuated by vibrant, colorful blooms. While the observatory, paths, and plazas are accessible 24 hours a day, the view of the mountains and the subtle changes in light and night scenery vary depending on the time of day and season.
This park serves both as a sports hub and a nature sanctuary. Visitors can engage in active sports using the Mizuho Construction Stadium (athletics), baseball fields, or tennis courts. For those interested in learning, the park often hosts 'Outdoor Observation Sessions' and 'Bird Watching Events,' allowing for deep engagement with the local ecosystem. Additionally, the park features camping and BBQ areas (both covered and uncovered), making it a perfect spot for an extended stay in nature.
The park is surrounded by the iconic natural landscapes of Gunma Prefecture, including Mt. Haruna and Mt. Akagi. Its strategic location also provides easy access to famous hot spring resorts like Ikaho Onsen, allowing travelers to easily combine a nature walk with a traditional hot spring experience. The local topography and vegetation are characteristic of the high-altitude environment at 600 meters.
Due to the vast size of the park, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please choose clothing appropriate for the season and weather. If you plan to use the paid facilities such as the camping or BBQ areas, please ensure you have cash on hand. Some facilities may have seasonal closing periods, so checking in advance is advised. To protect the precious natural environment, please follow all park rules, including the strict prohibition of picking plants and the requirement to take all trash home with you.
