Shibata Castle is a flatland castle located in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture. Unlike many mountain castles, it was built on flat land to serve as a center for politics and economy due to its high accessibility. Its most striking feature is the 'Namako' walls, which present a beautiful contrast of black and white. The stone walls are constructed using the 'Kirikomi-hagi' technique, where stones are precisely fitted together without gaps, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. The castle is surrounded by the waters of the Shibata River, creating a scenic landscape of moats and stone walls that evokes a deep sense of history.
The castle once boasted a grand structure consisting of Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sanmaru enclosures, with 11 turrets and 5 gates. A particularly rare feature is the 'three-story turret' (Sankai-yagura), which was designed to house three Shachihoko (mythical carp-shaped creatures). In 2004, this turret and the Tatsumi turret were reconstructed. Additionally, a statue of Yasube Horibe, a central figure in the famous Ako Vendetta (the 47 Ronin story), stands in front of the main gate, serving as a symbol of the local history.
The main attractions of Shibata Castle include the reconstructed three-story turret and the precision-engineered stone walls. Within the castle park, visitors can observe various historical structures and displays that showcase traditional castle architecture. The statue of Yasube Horibe is also an essential stop for history enthusiasts. Furthermore, the castle park offers beautiful seasonal scenery, including vibrant flower beds and landscapes where purple and white irises bloom in harmony with the historical ruins.
Shibata Castle offers different charms throughout the seasons. In spring, the area is adorned with blooming cherry blossoms, while in winter, you can witness the majestic sight of the castle covered in snow. The castle grounds are open from April to November. From December to March, the castle is closed for the winter season (though the exterior can still be viewed from the outside). The standard opening hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (closing at 4:30 PM in November). Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and stone walls.
The Shibata City Tourist Information Center offers bicycle rentals, allowing visitors to easily explore the surrounding castle town and historical areas. For those who wish to collect mementos of their journey, 'Goshuin' (temple/shrine stamps) and 'Japan 100 Famous Castles' cards are also available for purchase, serving as a wonderful way to commemorate your visit.
The area surrounding the castle retains much of its historical charm. You can find traditional street signs, the 'Old Temple Town' street lined with temples, and old highways featuring rows of pine trees and milestones. Additionally, the nearby 'Tsukemoka Onsen' hot spring area makes it easy to combine a historical tour with a relaxing spa experience.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes when exploring the castle park. While the paths are well-maintained, please be mindful of your footing around the historical ruins. Cash may be required for services such as bicycle rentals or nearby facilities. Please note that English-language signage and staff support may be limited. While entry to the castle park is free, please check the opening hours and seasonal closures in advance.
