Setoai Gorge, located on the upper reaches of the Kinu River in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, is a magnificent canyon that encapsulates the breathtaking beauty of natural geological formations. This area once held small settlements with legends of the Heike clan's refugees. However, with the construction of the Kawamata Dam, these former villages were submerged, and the landscape underwent a significant transformation. Today, the area has been developed into a new form of tourism that embraces this change. While there was a period when water levels were lower due to dam management, the commencement of water discharge in 2004 restored the lush water flow and the majestic beauty of the canyon. Furthermore, the suspension bridge, once used for dam maintenance, has been opened to the public as the 'Watarassai Suspension Bridge,' blending historical context with modern sightseeing.
The greatest highlight is the view from the 'Watarassai Suspension Bridge,' which spans the front of the Kawamata Dam. The contrast between the sheer cliffs looming above your feet and the river flowing far below is nothing short of spectacular. Crossing the bridge allows you to feel the true scale of nature. There are also well-maintained walking paths that allow you to enjoy the canyon's sculptural beauty from multiple angles. The scenery changes beautifully with every season, particularly during the autumn foliage season when the surrounding mountains are painted in vivid colors, transforming the entire gorge into a living work of art.
While Setoai Gorge offers different charms throughout the year, the autumn foliage season (September to November) is highly recommended. The season of fresh greenery (May to June) is also beautiful and ideal for hiking. Please note that the walking paths are closed during the winter season (late November to late April), so be sure to check the schedule before visiting. During the daytime, sunlight hitting the water and rock faces creates a brilliant glow, making it an excellent time for photography.
Here, you can enjoy a relaxing 'nature walk.' Walking along the maintained paths while listening to the sound of the water and feeling the presence of the cliffs provides a sense of healing that is hard to find in the city. The site also features a Dam Museum, where you can learn about the coexistence of nature and engineering. While not a rigorous mountain climb, it offers a wonderful trekking experience where you can observe geological formations up close.
The surrounding area features famous hot spring destinations such as Kawamata Onsen and Yunishigawa Onsen. A perfect itinerary involves relaxing in these hot springs to soothe your fatigue after exploring the gorge. The area is also easily accessible from major sightseeing spots in Nikko, making it a great addition to a Nikko sightseeing tour. It is also a popular area for scenic drives due to its rich natural environment.
Comfortable walking shoes (such as sneakers or hiking shoes) are essential. Although the paths are maintained, they can be slippery or uneven due to the natural environment. Cash is recommended for any expenses at the Dam Museum or nearby facilities. While there are some English signs, detailed English support from staff may be limited, so it is helpful to be prepared. To protect the environment, please follow local etiquette, such as taking your trash home and not picking plants.
