Nunimiike is a high-altitude lake with a diameter of approximately 20 meters, located at an altitude of about 2,080 meters in Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture. The pond is believed to have been formed by the activity of ancient glaciers that once covered this region, creating a depression that now holds water. This creates a mystical landscape that allows visitors to feel the profound history of the Earth. The surrounding skyline is dominated by some of Japan's most striking and sharp mountain peaks, including Mt. Tsurugi, the Yatsumine mountains, and Komado-no-O. The sight of the pond resting in silence against this grand silhouette is truly breathtaking. The name of this site was bestowed by Jiro Kanematsu in 1926. Due to its significant geological background as a glacial landform, it is recognized as an important site within the Tateyama Kurobe Geo Park. The current beautiful lake scenery was shaped over countless years by the movement of glaciers. Historically, it has been known as a place to experience the wonders of nature, possessing a solemn atmosphere that could almost be a subject of nature worship alongside its geological value.
The greatest charm lies in the contrast between the unique depression formed by glacial topography and the water that fills it. The reflection of the surrounding mountain ridges on the surface of the pond is a masterpiece of natural art. The scale of the landscape, framed by the surrounding peaks, offers a sense of grandeur unique to high-altitude environments, and the scenery changes dramatically depending on the season and weather. Additionally, facilities such as the Nunimiike Hut serve as a base for those wishing to learn more about the high-altitude natural environment.
The appearance of Nunimiike changes with the seasons. The best time to enjoy the stunning high-altitude scenery is from July to October. You can experience the refreshing summer breezes and blue skies, or the vibrant colors of the autumn foliage when the surrounding mountains turn brilliant hues. Regarding the time of day, the midday hours are ideal, as the sunlight illuminates the surface of the pond and makes the surrounding mountain peaks stand out vividly.
This area is primarily used as a base for nature observation and high-altitude trekking. Due to the high altitude, visitors can learn about the local topography and the geological processes of how glaciers shaped the land. Observing the surrounding mountains is a key part of experiencing the iconic landscapes of the Japanese Alps. However, please note that the natural environment is extremely delicate, and visitors are expected to act with great care to preserve the surroundings.
Near Nunimiike, you will find the Nunimiike Hut, a facility designed for hikers and nature lovers. The pond is located approximately 100 meters east of the Sennin Pass (Sennin-toge), making it a key part of the local trekking routes. As part of the Tateyama Kurobe Geo Park, the area is dotted with other spots featuring unique geological characteristics and glacial landforms.
Because the altitude is approximately 2,080m, temperatures are significantly lower than at sea level. Regardless of the season, you must prepare warm clothing. As the terrain can be uneven and unstable, sturdy hiking boots are essential. Regarding payments, please carry cash, as it may be required at local facilities or nearby shops. Since this is a protected natural area, please follow strict etiquette: carry all your trash back with you and do not disturb the environment. As English signage is limited, it is highly recommended to check your route and topography in advance.
