Senkoji Park is a highlight of Onomichi tourism, sprawling across the slopes and summit of Mount Senkoji in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. With a history dating back to 1894, it is a highly renowned destination, recognized as one of 'Japan's Top 100 Night Views' and one of the '100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan.' The true charm lies in the unique perspective of looking down upon the gentle waves of the Seto Inland Sea and the iconic winding streets of Onomichi.
The origins of the park date back to the Meiji era. In 1894, the head priest of Senkoji Temple provided the land to create a space for both religious pilgrims and local recreation, originally known as 'Kyorakuen.' Over the years, the area has evolved into its current form, serving as a beloved resting place for both locals and tourists while preserving the historic landscape of Onomichi. Most recently, in 2022, the observation facilities were renovated to provide an even more comfortable and modern environment for enjoying the views.
The park features two distinctive observation areas.
The first is the 'Summit Observatory (Nickname: PEAK)' located at the top. This facility, renovated in 2022, consists of a 63-meter long, 3.6-meter wide structure that provides a 360-degree panoramic view. It is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring loop-style stairs and elevators.
The second is the 'Senkoji Park Viewpoint (Nickname: MiTeMi)' located at the western end of the park. This area utilizes the second floor of the former 'Onomichi Castle' museum site and is equipped with benches, allowing visitors to relax and soak in the atmosphere at their own pace.
In spring, the 'Cherry Blossom Avenue' is a must-see, with approximately 1,500 cherry trees in full bloom. Additionally, the slope south of the art museum features a flower bed of Pyrethrum (Chrysanthemum), known as the 'White Carpet Hill,' offering beautiful seasonal colors.
Senkoji Park offers a completely different atmosphere depending on when you visit.

The cherry blossom season is spectacular, with Yoshino cherry trees blooming across the park. It is a very popular time for visitors to enjoy strolls under the blossoms.

As one of 'Japan's Top 100 Night Views,' the night scenery is exceptional. From the observation decks, you can witness the beautiful contrast between the illuminated cityscape and the dark expanse of the Seto Inland Sea. Many facilities are accessible 24 hours a day, making a night stroll a wonderful option.
The main activity is strolling through the park while enjoying the high-altitude views. You can experience the nostalgic atmosphere of Onomichi while walking the 'Literary Path.' The park also houses the Onomichi City Museum, where you can connect with local culture and appreciate the works of artists like Kazusaku Kobayashi, a local figure.
Many essential Onomichi sightseeing spots are located around the park. You can use the Senkoji Ropeway to travel smoothly from the foot of the mountain to the summit. The surrounding area is filled with literary-themed slopes, historic temples, and charming cafes, making it a popular route to explore on foot after enjoying the views.
