Senkoji is an independent temple of the Shingon sect located in Higashitsutsudo-cho, Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Situated halfway up Mount Daibo at an altitude of 140 meters, it offers an unobstructed, panoramic view of Onomichi Port, the Seto Inland Sea, and the island of Mukaishima. As one of the 'Three Mountains of Onomichi,' it has long been a symbol of the region's natural beauty. The temple grounds feature a harmonious blend of natural rock formations and historic architecture.
The history of Senkoji dates back to 806 (the first year of the Daido era) during the early Heian period. It was founded by Kobo Daishi and later revitalized by Tada no Mitsunaka. Within the grounds lies the 'Tama no Iwa' (Jewel Rock), a massive rock formation that is central to local legends and the namesake of the area. The main hall, built in 1686, is notable for its 'butai-zukuri' (stage-style) architecture. Additionally, the temple bell is famous for its powerful, resonant sound, a feature frequently celebrated in classical Japanese poetry.
The temple grounds are dotted with numerous historical structures and stone monuments. The main hall is particularly striking with its vermilion color and a Shumi-dan (altar) that blends Japanese and Chinese architectural styles. Near the approach to the main hall, you will find several cultural assets designated by the city, including the Amida Sanzon stone statues and the Gyakushu-to pagoda. Behind the main hall lies the 'Kusari-yama' area, a former site for ascetic training, where the unique landscape of natural rocks and rugged terrain can be observed.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the entire mountain is blanketed in the vibrant colors of cherry blossoms. During the daytime, the contrast between the deep blue of the Seto Inland Sea and the cityscape of Onomichi is exceptionally clear. Walking the 'Literary Path' allows visitors to trace the footsteps of the poets and writers who once found inspiration here.

For those seeking a more rugged experience, the path toward the Ishizuchi Gongen area behind the main hall offers a glimpse into the steep, rocky terrain used for ancient spiritual training. Additionally, visitors can purchase Goshuin (temple seals) or original charms through the temple's online shop.
The area surrounding Senkoji is filled with charming, old streets that preserve the history of Onomichi. Cultural facilities, such as the Onomichi City Museum of Art, are within walking distance. There is also a parking lot available at Senkoji Park, serving as a base for local sightseeing. Most visitors arrive from Onomichi Port or the city center via the ropeway, making it a seamless part of a walking tour through the town.

Due to the many stairs, slopes, and stone steps, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. It is also wise to carry water if you plan to explore the higher parts of the mountain.
