Senjojiki Cirque is a magnificent glacial landform (cirque) located at the foot of Mount Hoken in the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains), spanning Komagane City and Miyada Village in Nagano Prefecture. From Senjojiki Station at an altitude of 2,612m, a vast, breathtaking glacial basin unfolds before your eyes. The landscape undergoes dramatic seasonal changes: vibrant alpine flora blooms in the summer, while the scenery turns into a brilliant gold in the autumn.
The topography of Senjojiki Cirque was sculpted by ancient glacial erosion. This region is a significant geological site, with other glacial features like the Nokeike Cirque nearby. Scientific studies, including Beryllium-10 (10Be) analysis, have been conducted to understand its formation, suggesting it was shaped during the last glacial period.
The greatest draw of Senjojiki Cirque is its abundance of alpine plants. In summer, you can witness dense clusters of plants such as Veratrum album (Japanese false hellebore), Shinano-kinbai, Aleutian avens, and Miyama karamatsu. The upper meadows are particularly famous for their large colonies of Shinano-kinbai. Visitors can also enjoy the dramatic views of the surrounding rock walls and the rugged peak of Mount Hoken while walking along the well-maintained paths. A complete loop of the walking trail takes approximately 45 minutes.
The scenery varies beautifully with the seasons. Summer offers lush flower gardens, while autumn brings a golden glow to the landscape and colorful foliage. In winter (from December onwards), the area is transformed into a pure, white snowy wonderland. However, please be extremely cautious during winter as the terrain is prone to avalanches.
You can enjoy leisurely strolls in this high-altitude environment (approx. 2,600m). The area features facilities like "2612 Café & Restaurant," which offers large windows for viewing the Central Alps, and "SO・RA・TO・KI," which features an outdoor terrace. These are perfect spots to relax and soak in the nature. Additionally, from mid-April to late May, a T-bar lift is sometimes installed for skiing activities.
Access to Senjojiki Cirque is typically via a combination of bus and ropeway from the Sugadai Bus Center. The area also features lounges with views overlooking the Southern Alps and the city of Komagane, making it a popular base for both mountaineers and sightseers.
As this is a high-altitude environment, please wear sturdy walking shoes or trekking shoes. Temperatures drop significantly in the morning and evening, so it is highly recommended to bring extra warm clothing. When taking photos, please step to the side of the path to avoid obstructing other visitors. If you plan to go mountaineering, ensure you have proper climbing gear and have submitted a mountain climbing plan.
