The Sengokuhara Susuki Grassland is a vast expanse of silver grass located in Sengokuhara, Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. Situated at the foot of Mount Daigatake, this area has been selected as one of the '50 Scenic Spots of Kanagawa' and '100 Best Flower Spots of Kanagawa.' It is renowned for its breathtaking natural scenery, particularly in autumn when the silver grass transforms into a shimmering golden-colored panorama that stretches across the horizon.
Maintaining this beautiful landscape requires meticulous-management. In the past, without regular maintenance, trees would encroach upon the grasslands, eventually turning the area into a woodland. This trend was observed in the 1970s, but since 1989, the traditional practice of 'Yamayaki' (controlled mountain burning) has been resumed. Every year in March, on a calm day, this controlled burn is conducted to preserve the natural ecosystem and restore the beautiful grassland appearance that has been preserved for generations.
The most spectacular sight is the dense clusters of silver grass covering the slopes of Mount Daigatake. Well-maintained paths allow visitors to walk through the heart of the grass, feeling completely surrounded by nature. During the autumn season, the way the sunlight reflects off the swaying silver grass creates a mesmerizing, luminous texture. Additionally, the annual mountain burning in March is a significant event that symbolizes the strength and cycle of nature.
The most striking time to visit is from September to November. During these months, you can witness the magnificent golden panorama spreading across the mountain's base. While there are no specific opening hours as it is a natural area, autumn is the most popular time for visits to see the seasonal transformation. Visitors interested in the ecological cycle may also find the March mountain-burning period fascinating.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the established paths through the silver grass. The area provides a close-up experience of Hakone's unique topography and vegetation. The surrounding area is also home to various art museums, hot spring facilities, and luxury accommodations, allowing you to easily integrate a visit to the grassland into a broader Hakone sightseeing itinerary.
The Sengokuhara area offers many facilities to connect with nature and culture. This includes the Hakone Visitor Center for learning about local ecosystems, the Hakone Wetland Gardens, and artistic destinations like the Hakone Lalique Museum and the Glass Forest. With numerous hot spring inns (ryokan) and restaurants nearby, it serves as an excellent base for an extended stay in Hakone.
