Sendai Daikannon (officially known as Sendai Tendo Hakui Daikannon) is a colossal Kannon statue located within the grounds of Daikannmitsu-ji, a temple of the Shingon Shuci school in Izumi Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Standing at a staggering 100 meters tall, its presence is so massive that it can be seen from various parts of the city. The most extraordinary feature of this site is the ability to enter the 'body' of the Kannon statue itself. After ascending to the top via an elevator, visitors descend via a staircase, allowing for a unique spiritual journey through the interior where numerous Buddhist statues are enshrined.
Daikannmitsu-ji is a temple belonging to the Shingon Shuci sect. The current Sendai Daikannon statue was inaugurated on September 1, 1991. The construction was driven by the vision of businessman Mr. Man Mitsuru, who wished to create a famous landmark for Sendai, rooted in his deep religious faith. The height of 100 meters was chosen to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sendai's transition to a designated city. Furthermore, the structure symbolizes prosperity for the 21st century, with the foundation extending 21 meters into the ground.
The absolute highlight is the interior tour. Upon entering, you first ride the elevator to the highest level. The top floor features observation windows that offer a stunning view of the Sendai cityscape and, on clear days, even the Pacific coastline. From there, you descend the stairs through 12 distinct levels, passing by 108 Buddhist statues, the 33 Kannon deities, and the Twelve Heavenly Generals. The entrance to the base is designed to resemble a dragon's mouth (Ryumon), making it look as if the Kannon is riding a dragon when viewed from the front. The exterior, finished with white fluororesin coating, makes it a striking landmark visible from afar.
The statue offers different charms depending on the season. In summer, the pure white statue against a bright blue sky creates a refreshing and serene sight. In winter, the sight of the massive statue draped in a blanket of snow creates a mystical and ethereal atmosphere found nowhere else. At sunset, the changing light creates a tranquil mood as the statue transforms with the fading sun. This site offers a sense of a 'miniature pilgrimage' away from daily life. The process of ascending to the top by elevator and then descending through the levels of Buddhist statues is a rare and meditative experience. The interior is filled with a sense of stillness, allowing visitors to reflect and connect with Buddhist spirituality. Additionally, at the Daikokudo hall within the temple grounds, you can witness the unique local tradition of offering oil to Daikokuten.
Sendai Daikannon is located in a residential and leisure-oriented area of Izumi Ward. The area is easily accessible and near accommodations like the Sendai Hills Hotel. Nearby, you can also find other large Buddhist figures, such as the 16-meter tall Aiko Daibutsu, making it possible to enjoy a 'Giant Buddha Pilgrimage' theme during your trip. Most visitors arrive via bus from central Sendai, making it an easy addition to a sightseeing itinerary.
