Senbonmatsu Farm is one of the largest tourist farms in the North Kanto region, located in the Nasunogahara area of Nasushiobara, Tochigi Prefecture. The farm is characterized by its vast pastures spanning over 200 hectares, situated on a plateau at an altitude of 320 to 380 meters. Every day, the farm produces incredibly fresh milk from more than 500 dairy cows. Founded in 1902 by Masakuni Matsukata, the farm has a long history and was a pioneer in modern, Western-style agricultural management. Today, it serves as a comprehensive leisure facility where agriculture, dining, shopping, hot springs, and outdoor activities converge, attracting between 800,000 and 900,000 visitors annually.
The history of this farm dates back to the Meiji era in 1902, when politician Masakuni Matsukata acquired land from the Nasu Reclamation Company to establish the site. The surrounding area was originally filled with Japanese black pine trees, which is the origin of the name "Senbonmatsu" (meaning "A Thousand Pines"). While it began as a model for modern agricultural management, the farm was later transferred to Horai Industrial Co., Ltd. (now Horai Co., Ltd.) in 1928. After World War II, the farm focused on dairy farming and established its status as a premier tourist destination, notably introducing its famous Genghis Khan (mutton BBQ) in 1964. Its proximity to the Nishinasuno-Shiobara IC on the Tohoku Expressway makes it a highly accessible historical landmark.
Senbonmatsu Farm offers a diverse range of experiences to connect you with nature. The activities are a major draw: enjoy the breathtaking views from a hot air balloon, or feel the connection with animals through horseback riding and horse-drawn carriage rides.
