Senbonhama is a scenic coastal area located in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It encompasses the eastern end of the Fuji Coast, stretching approximately 19km from the mouth of the Fuji River to the vicinity of Numazu Port along the inner reaches of Suruga Bay. The area is defined by the iconic 'Senbon Matsubara' (Thousand Pine Trees) forest and a sturdy seawall designed for coastal protection. This seawall serves a dual purpose: protecting the inland areas and providing a beautifully maintained long promenade. Today, it is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike to enjoy scenic strolls, jogging, and breathtaking ocean views.
The development of this coastline has always balanced natural beauty with disaster prevention. The seawall was constructed to protect the region from tsunamis and coastal erosion. Historically, this area was also home to the 'Sunset Pageant,' a beloved local fireworks festival held in late August, which was discontinued in 2011. The most vibrant time to visit Senbonhama is during the summer (July and August) when the beach is fully operational and lively with swimmers. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours to see the vibrant blue of the ocean and sky, or arrive in the late afternoon to witness a stunning sunset over Suruga Bay.
