Located in the center of Iwagi Island, Ehime Prefecture, Mt. Sekizenzan stands at an altitude of approximately 370 meters. The greatest attraction of this location is the sight of over 3,000 cherry blossoms blooming to cover the mountain slopes in spring. The cherry blossom path, stretching about 4 kilometers along the northern ridge, is so beautiful it is compared to a 'Celestial Robe' (Tennyo no Hagoromo). The landscape, where the pale pink blossoms weave together with the many islands of the Seto Inland Sea, is a quintessential symbol of Japanese spring.
The history of Mt. Sekizenzan is more than just preserving a natural landscape. There was a period when pine trees were extensively harvested for fuel during wartime. However, the current cherry blossom scenery was shaped by the hands of the islanders. What started with a few trees planted by a single individual grew into a community-wide effort. Today, it is a deep-rooted culture to plant cherry trees to celebrate life milestones, such as nursery school graduations or 60th birthday celebrations (Kanreki). As the name 'Sekizen' suggests—meaning to accumulate good deeds—this 'Island Treasure' has been protected through a spirit of kindness and community.
The ultimate highlight is the 360-degree panoramic view from the summit observatory. Through the blooming cherry blossoms, you can gaze upon the islands that make up the Shimanami Kaido and the Yumeshima Kaido, as well as the calm surface of the Seto Inland Sea. To the northwest, the beautiful silhouettes of Ikuchi Island and Omishima appear, while to the east, Yugejima Island can be seen. Additionally, occasional nighttime illuminations create a mystical scene where white petals glow against the dark sky. Along the walking paths, you can also find the Torii gate of Myoken Shrine, which is related to ancient megalithic worship, allowing you to enjoy a landscape where nature and culture blend seamlessly.
The most beautiful time to visit is during the cherry blossom season from March to April. During this period, the entire mountain is enveloped in a color that looks like a pink cloud. Under the clear light of the morning, the white of the blossoms and the blue of the sea contrast beautifully, making it perfect for photography. In the evening, the sky turns into a gradient of pink and orange, creating a highly emotional and dramatic landscape as the sunset illuminates the blossoms and the sea.
Activities at Mt. Sekizenzan center around hiking and nature walks. Walking the route starting from the Iwaki Sakura Park, you can observe various species such as Somei Yoshino, weeping cherries, and double-flowered cherries. As you ascend the mountain paths, the scenery transitions from an open park to a serene, quiet forest. Passing through the 'cherry blossom tunnel' offers a special moment to forget daily life. At the summit observatory, you can spend a relaxing time gazing at the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
Many charming spots are scattered around Iwagi Island. These include the scenic driving routes along the Tatara Bridge (part of the Shimanami Kaido) and the bridges of the Yumeshima Kaido, as well as beautiful coastlines. The island also features local eateries and accommodations, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful pace of island life. You can enjoy the entire experience of an island journey through the Seto Inland Sea, including the surrounding islands accessible by boat.
