Sekiya Gen'ya Native Flower Garden is a vast wetland covering 14.34 hectares, located at the southern foot of Mt. Kurikoma in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. The name 'Sekiya' refers to a wide wetland area, characterized by a long, narrow topography spanning elevations between approximately 669 and 707 meters. The ecosystem is built upon a thick layer of peat and sphagnum moss, which supports a diverse variety of alpine plants. The area is divided into eight distinct wetlands across three levels (upper, middle, and lower), separated by lush beech forests.
Situated on the gentle southern slopes of Mt. Kurikoma, this area plays a vital role in regional nature conservation. The wetland has maintained a unique ecosystem over many years, thanks to the accumulation of peat and moss. It is widely recognized as a treasure trove of alpine flora and serves as a symbolic scenic spot representing the natural heritage of the region.
The greatest charm of the garden is the changing expression of the alpine plants throughout the seasons. The most iconic sight is the massive bloom of Nikko Kisuge (Daylilies) in late June, which paints the entire wetland in a brilliant shade of orange. This view is famous throughout Japan. From May to September, visitors can enjoy a succession of blooms including Mizubasho (Skunk Cabbage), Rengetutsuji (Japanese Azalea), and Ezo Oyama Rindou (Gentian). The well-maintained wooden boardwalks allow for a close-up observation of these natural wonders while walking through the surrounding beech forests.

The main activity is a peaceful stroll through nature. From the parking lot, it is approximately 0.5 km (about 15 minutes on foot) to the first wetland, and 1.2 km (about 25 minutes on foot) to the second wetland. The wooden boardwalks provide a safe way to observe the delicate ecosystem. To protect the environment, visitors are strictly prohibited from stepping off the designated paths.
The area around Mt. Kurikoma is rich in natural beauty. There are various hiking trails and nature observation spots nearby, making it an ideal destination for those who enjoy mountain trekking and seasonal outdoor activities.
While the boardwalks are well-maintained, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Because temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the season and weather, it is wise to bring layers for easy adjustment. As this is a protected natural area, picking flowers or any activity that harms the environment is strictly prohibited.
