Sekai Ichi no Sakura Namiki, located at the foot of Mount Iwaki in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, is a magnificent cherry blossom avenue stretching approximately 20km. It is home to about 6,500 Oyamazakura (mountain cherry) trees, and its sheer scale has earned it the title of the 'World's Greatest Cherry Blossom Avenue.' Because the path follows the natural elevation changes of the terrain, the cherry blossoms bloom at different times depending on the altitude, creating a staggered, beautiful spectacle. With well-maintained walkways alongside the road, visitors can enjoy the scenery both by car and by foot.
This avenue is the result of a dedicated 10-year planting project that began in 1985. The goal was to create a permanent way of cherry blossoms at the foot of the nature-rich Mount Iwaki. This systematic planting has preserved the landscape, which is a vital part of the local cultural identity, where humans and nature have long lived in harmony. The area is deeply connected to the natural beauty of the Iwaki mountain range.
The most striking feature is the endless canopy of Oyamazakura trees that fills your entire field of vision. The overwhelming scale of the 20km path is truly awe-inspiring. Because the blooming progresses from the lower areas near Mozawa toward the higher elevations, the scenery changes beautifully depending on when you visit. The walking paths allow you to step away from the car to experience the blossoms up close, offering a much more intimate connection with nature than a simple drive.
The peak season for the cherry blossoms is from late April to early May. Due to the varying altitudes, the 'best time' depends on which section you are visiting. It is crucial to check the blooming status if you want to see the full blossoms, as the progression moves from low to high ground. We recommend visiting during the daytime to enjoy the vibrant colors of the flowers under the bright sunlight.
