Kiyoharu Art Colony is a unique cultural complex located in Nagasaka, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. It was established on the grounds of the former Kiyoharu Elementary School. The sprawling site is home to several notable institutions, including the Kiyoharu Shirakaba Museum and the Museum of Light, alongside various historic buildings, artist studios, and guest houses. It is a place where visitors can immerse themselves in contemporary art and historical architecture while being surrounded by the rich, natural beauty of the Yamanashi countryside.
The site holds a deep sense of history, having been repurposed from the grounds of a school completed in 1925. While preserving the architectural heritage of the former school building, the colony has evolved into a vibrant hub for artists and intellectuals. It serves as a center for diverse exhibitions and cultural programs, bridging the gap between preserving local history and presenting new, innovative forms of artistic expression.
The complex features multiple exhibition spaces. The Kiyoharu Shirakaba Museum and the Museum of Light host various exhibitions by both domestic and international artists. Beyond the art itself, the historical architecture and the surrounding natural landscape are major attractions. The changing seasons offer a different experience each time, from the nostalgic atmosphere of the old school buildings to the beautifully manicured gardens that shift with the weather.
Located in an area with distinct seasonal changes, the scenery is breathtaking throughout the year. April is particularly special, as the cherry blossoms bloom across the grounds, creating a stunning 'cherry blossom tunnel' effect. In autumn, the vibrant colors of the changing leaves provide a perfect backdrop for art appreciation. The facility is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last entry allowed at 4:30 PM.
In addition to viewing art, visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the grounds to experience the harmony of architecture and nature. For those seeking a deeper connection, the 'Supporter Membership' program offers access to exclusive areas, special events, and unique programs that are generally closed to the public, providing a multi-layered cultural experience.
The colony is situated in the southern foothills of the Yatsugatake mountains, a region known for its abundant nature. Nearby, you can find local eateries that utilize fresh, regional ingredients, making it easy to enjoy a delicious meal after your art tour. We recommend renting a car to easily explore the surrounding scenic routes and nearby attractions.
As the grounds are quite extensive and include natural paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that payment is primarily cash-based. If you are visiting with a pet, an additional fee of 500 JPY per pet is required. Regarding photography, please be mindful of signs, as restrictions may apply in certain exhibition areas. As the site contains some uneven surfaces and steps due to its historical nature, please be aware of accessibility-related considerations.
