The Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamaru is a historic memorial facility that preserves a former Seikan Ferry in its original form. This vessel played a vital role in supporting Japan's modernization and logistics between Honshu and Hokkaido. Now moored at Aomori Port, it serves as a museum where visitors can observe the intricate ship structures, equipment, and technology used during its era.
The Seikan Ferry was a crucial transportation link between Aomori and Hakodate, separated by the Tsugaru Strait. The Hakkodamaru symbolizes this historical role. Inside, the vessel retains the distinct lifestyle of passengers and the advanced logistics technology of the time. More than just an exhibit, it stands as a cultural heritage site that conveys the maritime history and the regional connections of Japan.
The ship is divided into several decks, each offering unique exhibits. On the 4th-floor navigation deck, you can find the bridge and radio room, showcasing the navigation technology of the era. The space around the funnel also serves as an observation area, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. The 3rd-floor promenade deck recreates living spaces, such as the staterooms and the captain's quarters, once used by passengers. On the 1st-floor vehicle deck, you can see the space once used for transporting railway cars and postal vehicles, illustrating the seamless connection between sea and land logistics. Additionally, the B1 level features the engine room, the heart of the ship, where you can see the historic structure of the eight 1,600-horsepower engines up close.
During the summer season (April 1st to October 31st), the museum is open until 19:00, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of the ship even in the evening. In the winter (November 1st to March 31st), closing time is earlier at 17:00. On clear days, the view from the 4th-floor observation deck is exceptionally vivid and perfect for observing the seaside scenery. Please note that the funnel observation area may be closed during bad weather or in winter.
Through the exhibits, you can observe the lives of sailors and passengers and the advanced mechanical technology of the time. To commemorate your visit, you can collect one of two special stamps available on-site. Furthermore, there is a dedicated space where you can pose for photos wearing authentic crew uniforms and hats, providing a visual and immersive way to understand the historical background.
Hakkodamaru is located near the Ferry Pier in Aomori Port, surrounded by various sightseeing spots in the Aomori Bay area. You can also check local gourmet and event information via community apps like 'PIAZZA'. The ship is conveniently located within walking distance from JR Aomori Station, making it an easy stop during your travels.
The entire ship is non-smoking. Bringing food or drinks inside is generally prohibited, except for water for hydration. For visitors using wheelchairs, please note that there are steps and physical limitations within the ship; we recommend consulting the front desk or using the intercom in advance. Please also respect the rules regarding contact with exhibits and photography etiquette.
