Shizumine Furusato Park is a beautiful public park located in Naka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The park's development began in 1965, when a 40,000 m² area adjacent to the Shizumine Shrine was transformed into a recreational space. By 1970, the park had expanded significantly to its current size of 120,000 m². Over the years, various amenities such as play areas, a water stage, and a waterbird pond have been added to enhance the visitor experience. The park is most famous for its collection of approximately 2,000 cherry trees, with a particular emphasis on the Yaezakura (late-blooming double cherry blossoms).
The history of this park dates back to 1965. Originally a much smaller area of 40,000 m², it was expanded to the current 120,000 m² in 1970 to provide more space for the community and visitors. A unique feature of the park is the 'Shidori no Sato' facility, which includes bathing facilities for relaxation. The name 'Shidori' is deeply connected to local history, relating to the term 'Shidori' (or Shizuo) mentioned in the 'Hitachi no Kuni Fudoki,' an ancient record of the region, adding a layer of historical depth to the site.
The park's primary attraction is the stunning display of approximately 2,000 cherry trees. The Yaezakura variety is the centerpiece, making this a renowned spot for cherry blossom lovers. Beyond the sakura, the park offers a diverse botanical experience with seasonal blooms such as plum blossoms, Yoshino cherry blossoms, azaleas, hydrangeas, and bush clover (hagi). Visitors can also enjoy the serene waterbird pond, the water stage for events, and various play facilities for children, making it a perfect destination for families.
The park's landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. The peak season for the signature Yaezakura cherry blossoms is from late April to early May. Throughout the year, you can witness different floral displays including plum blossoms, azaleas, and hydrangeas. For those who wish to experience the park after dark, the park extends its opening hours until 21:00 during the special night-viewing periods, allowing you to witness the enchanting beauty of the illuminated cherry blossoms.
Visitors can engage with nature through various activities, such as observing waterbirds at the pond or enjoying performances at the water stage. The 'Shidori no Sato' facility provides a space for relaxation and bathing, offering a unique way to unwind. Whether you are walking through the seasonal flower paths or enjoying a peaceful moment by the water, the park offers a profound connection to the natural environment.
The park is conveniently located a 15-minute walk from JR Shizumine Station on the JR Suigun Line. For those traveling by car, it is approximately 6 km from the Naka Interchange on the Joban Expressway. The surrounding area also features the historic Shizumine Shrine, making it a great area for a full day of exploration.
Due to the vast size of the park, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please ensure you complete your activities within the designated opening hours. Note that the park is closed on Mondays (or Tuesdays if Monday is a public holiday) and during the New Year period from December 28th to January 4th.
