Sewaritei is a part of the Yodogawa Riverside Park located in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture. Situated at the confluence of the Uji and Kizu Rivers, it features a stunning cherry blossom path stretching approximately 1.4 km. During the spring season, about 220 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in unison, creating a magnificent pink tunnel. This area is one of southern Kyoto's most iconic scenic spots, offering a beautiful landscape of riverbanks that changes with the seasons.
The history of this region is deeply tied to the struggle against natural water disasters. During the Meiji era, the Yodo River area experienced numerous large-scale floods. Following significant floods in 1885, extensive river improvement works were undertaken. The current river path was established in 1910 (Meiji 43), and through subsequent river management, the current form of Sewaritei was perfected. While the area once featured magnificent pine trees known as 'Yamashiro no Hakuritsu,' many were lost to pests. Since 1978, efforts have been made to replant the area with Yoshino cherry trees. By April 1988, the area was opened to the public as the beautiful cherry blossom path seen today. It serves not only as a flood control facility but also as a vital cultural site that preserves the natural beauty of the region.
The greatest highlight is the 1.4km tunnel of Yoshino cherry blossoms. The sight of cherry trees lining both sides of the river, appearing to touch in the sky, is a mesmerizing experience for all visitors. Additionally, the adjacent 'Sakura Deai Kan' features an observation tower approximately 28 meters high. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the three-river confluence area. During the seasonal 'Sakura Festival,' visitors can enjoy the 'Sakura Marche' featuring local gourmet food and sweets, as well as unique experiences like the 'Sakura Deai Cruise' or 'E-boat' to view the blossoms from the water.
The most recommended time to visit is April during the peak cherry blossom season. During full bloom, the scenery is spectacular both during the day under bright sunlight and from the observation tower. The area becomes lively with families and tourists during the day. Please note that while the Sakura Deai Kan facility is generally open from 9:00 to 17:00, the observation tower itself closes at 16:30, so it is important to plan your visit accordingly.
During the spring event period, a variety of activities are available. You can enjoy local delicacies at the 'Sakura Marche' or see the blossoms from a different perspective via the 'Sakura Deai Cruise.' The well-maintained walking paths are also perfect for a relaxing stroll or a light bike ride, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings.
There are many historical sites near Sewaritei, such as the Ishizuchi Hachiman-gu Shrine. The vast Yodogawa Riverside Park also includes designated BBQ areas and spots for nature observation, making it a great place to enjoy nature even outside the cherry blossom season.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. As the riverbank can feel chilly when the wind blows in spring, bringing a light jacket or shawl is a good idea. Please follow local etiquette by taking your trash home and refraining from smoking outside of designated areas. If you are planning to visit by large bus, please check for any necessary prior reservations.
