The Obari Sawashiri Rice Terraces are a magnificent scenic spot located in Marumori Town, Miyagi Prefecture, where terraced fields are meticulously carved into the mountain slopes. Spanning a total area of 4.1 hectares, the landscape is characterized by its layered structure that follows the natural topography. Surrounded by lush greenery, this area is a symbol of traditional Japanese rural life. The scenery is constantly changing: you can witness the sky reflecting in the water surfaces, the growth of young rice plants, and the golden hues of ripe grain, making it a dynamic natural spectacle.
The development of these terraces has been a continuous effort by local communities, spanning from the Edo period to the modern era (post-1946). These fields were built by hand, utilizing the limited flat land and steep slopes to create a functional and beautiful agricultural system. Today, they serve as a precious cultural landscape that preserves the essence of 'Satoyama'—the traditional harmony between humans and nature that defines much of rural Japan.

The greatest attraction is the elegant, curved beauty of the terraced fields. From spring to early summer, during the rice planting season, the fields fill with water, creating a mirror-like effect that reflects the sky and clouds. Additionally, during certain periods, the surrounding mountains feature blooming Wisteria flowers, creating a stunning contrast between the delicate purple blossoms and the fresh green foliage. This seasonal shift offers a rich palette of colors for visitors to enjoy.
The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons. From April to June, the area is particularly beautiful as the rice planting preparations take place. In late May, you can witness the actual rice planting process, providing a deep sense of connection to Japanese rural traditions. This period also coincides with the blooming of Wisteria, adding vibrant colors to the scenery. For the best experience, visit during the bright daylight hours; the contrast between the blue sky and green mountains, along with the light reflecting off the water, creates incredibly photogenic moments.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful time while gazing at the traditional Japanese countryside. It is an ideal location for refreshing your mind in nature or practicing landscape photography. Whether you are looking to capture the perfect shot or simply want to breathe in the fresh air, the serene environment of the Obari Sawashiri Rice Terraces offers a profound sense of tranquility.
The area surrounding the terraces is rich in the natural beauty of Marumori Town, making it a great destination for hiking and nature walks.
