Sasari Dam is a historic dam located in the Akagawa district of Hakodate, Hokkaido. Built in 1923, it is renowned as Japan's first buttress dam and has been officially recognized as a "Civil Engineering Heritage" site due to its significant structural value. In front of the dam lies the "Zentei Hiroba" (Front Garden Plaza), a well-maintained lawn area that serves as a peaceful retreat for locals and visitors alike. The site is characterized by the striking beauty of the dam's structure, the surrounding lush nature, and the changing scenery of the seasons.
The dam utilizes a "buttress" design, a method used to save concrete by using auxiliary walls (buttresses) to support the face of the dam against water pressure. This advanced engineering technique was highly efficient for the era, especially during the Taisho period when concrete was a precious resource. Following renovations in 1985, the dam continues to serve as a vital water source for the citizens of Hakodate. It holds high historical value and is associated with various lists of modern industrial and water-related heritage sites in Japan.

The Front Garden Plaza is an ideal location for picnics, light sports, or simply relaxing in nature. Families and friends can unwind on the grass while exploring the historical architecture of the dam. It is also a wonderful place to stop during a scenic drive to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of Hakodate's outskirts.
The area surrounding the dam is rich in natural beauty and is easily accessible from central Hakodate. It is approximately a 15-minute drive from the city center. There are various hot spring facilities and accommodations scattered in the vicinity, making it a great place to visit during a sightseeing trip or as a rest stop while driving toward Sapporo.
As the dam is located in a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to enjoy a picnic at the Front Garden Plaza, bringing a leisure sheet (picnic mat) is highly recommended. For safety and maintenance of the dam, please do not enter restricted areas. Since temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the season, please prepare clothing suitable for the current weather.
