The Sawaira Rice Terraces are located on a gentle, fan-shaped slope in Asahi Town, Yamagata Prefecture. In 2009, this area was officially recognized as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The landscape undergoes dramatic transformations throughout the year: in spring, the filled paddies create a stunning 'water mirror' reflecting the sky; in summer, the fields turn a vibrant, lush green; and in autumn, they are covered in a golden carpet of ripe rice. A unique sight to observe in autumn is the 'Kuinoko' (traditional pole-drying method), which preserves the ancient, nostalgic atmosphere of rural Japan.
Rice cultivation in this region has long been adapted to the unique topography of the land. These terraces are more than just agricultural structures; they are a cultural landscape deeply intertwined with the lives of the local community. The 'Kuinoko' technique, where rice is dried on poles, is a traditional method that serves as a symbol of the agricultural heritage rooted in this land. This harmonious coexistence between nature and human tradition has shaped the beautiful scenery seen today.
The most striking feature is the dramatic change in scenery depending on the season. Visitors can witness the sky reflected in the water during spring, the energetic green gradients of summer, and the golden waves of autumn. The 'Ipponmatsu Park' serves as the primary observation point to enjoy these views. Within the park, the 'Himesayuri Garden' offers a beautiful way to enjoy seasonal flowers, such as the Hime-sayuri (Lilium japonicum), which bloom from late May to early June, adding even more color to the terraced landscape.
Because the landscape changes so significantly, your visit will yield a completely different experience depending on when you arrive. Spring (April–May) is ideal for seeing the 'water mirror' effect. Summer (June–August) is the best time to see the most vibrant green scenery. Autumn (September–October) is the peak season for the golden rice fields and the traditional 'Kuinoko' displays. Winter (January–March) offers a quiet, snow-covered landscape. For the best photography, we recommend visiting during the early morning or the soft light of the late afternoon.
The primary activities here are nature observation and photography. At the Ipponmatsu Park local market, you may encounter local women selling fresh, seasonal produce during the autumn months. This provides a wonderful opportunity to experience local hospitality and the daily life of the community. Additionally, you can enjoy viewing the seasonal flowers within the park grounds.
Asahi Town is dotted with several spots that showcase its rich natural beauty. For example, you can enjoy local wines at the 'Asahi Town Wine Castle.' The area also features historical sites like the 'Satake Family Residence' and outdoor-friendly locations like 'Mogami River Canoe Land.' Combining these visits will allow you to experience the full charm of Asahi Town.
Please prepare according to the season. From spring to autumn, wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes suitable for uneven terrain. In winter, be aware that road access may be restricted due to heavy snowfall. Cash is required if you plan to purchase items at local roadside stands. While the area is open for viewing, please respect the farmers and avoid entering active agricultural zones. As a scenic spot, it is generally free to visit, but please be mindful of your surroundings during your photography sessions.
