Sasaharagawa Senbonzakura is a celebrated cherry blossom destination located along the banks of the Sasahara River in the Mihoda-machi area of Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. Stretching approximately 2 km near the Myojin Bridge, about 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees stand in perfect rows. This site is more than just a natural landscape; it is deeply connected to the history of local community efforts, including tree planting and river maintenance. In 1996, the site was honored with the 'Sakura Kuryo Award' by the Japan Cherry Blossom Association, recognizing its long-standing preservation and historical significance.
The history of this location is rooted in river improvements conducted during the 1950s. Originally part of a river development project to prevent flooding, the embankments were later transformed into a scenic landscape through the dedicated tree-planting efforts of local residents. This community-driven initiative forms the foundation of the lush cherry blossom rows seen today. The site represents a beautiful fusion of natural environmental management and the enduring spirit of local community activity.
The most striking feature is the continuous line of approximately 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees following the river's curve. During the day in spring, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view of cherry blossoms reflecting against the river's flow. A major highlight occurs during the blossom season when traditional lanterns (bonbori) are lit, particularly around the charming waterwheel cottage area. The night illumination creates a completely different, ethereal atmosphere, making evening strolls a truly unforgettable experience.
The peak blooming season is typically from early to mid-April. During the daytime, you can enjoy a peaceful walk under the bright spring sun. For a more magical experience, visit during the evening illumination period (scheduled from 18:00 to 21:00). The contrast between the daylight views and the lantern-lit night scenery offers two distinct ways to enjoy the beauty of the blossoms.
In early spring, the 'Sasaharagawa Senbonzakura Festival' is often held, bringing local celebrations to the area. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the 2 km riverside promenade, observing the changing scenery as they walk.
