Saraki Misaki (Saraki Cape) is a scenic peninsula located in Kikonai Town, Kamiiso District, Hokkaido. What was once a barren landscape of stone and sand was transformed through the dedication of local residents. Following the donation of tulip bulbs in 2001, the community has worked tirelessly to develop this area. Today, it is celebrated as one of Hokkaido's premier flower destinations, where approximately 50,000 tulips bloom in early summer. The striking contrast between the vibrant, colorful blossoms and the deep blue of the surrounding ocean creates an unforgettable view.
The cape holds significant historical weight. In 1871, the Kanrin Maru, a vessel belonging to the Edo Shogunate, is said to have met its end in the waters off this coast. To honor this history, the site features the Kanrin Maru Memorial and monuments inspired by the ship. The development of the garden is also a testament to community spirit; since November 2003, local residents have led beautification efforts, including the installation of flower beds. In 2010, the project received the 'Handmade Local Heritage Award' for its success in creating a cultural hub centered around the memory of the Kanrin Maru. It is not just a natural landscape, but a living piece of local history.
The main attraction is the sea of roughly 50,000 tulips that bloom during the early summer months. The changing colors of the flowers offer a different facial expression to the landscape every season. Additionally, the historical monuments related to the Kanrin Maru provide a profound sense of place. Visitors can experience the harmony of historical remnants and natural beauty while enjoying the open, airy atmosphere of the coast. During the Tulip Fair in May, the area becomes even more lively with local product fairs, allowing visitors to enjoy regional specialties alongside the floral displays.
The best time to visit is from May to June. The peak of the season occurs in May during the 'Tulip Fair,' when the flowers are at their most magnificent. Visiting during this time ensures you see the landscape at its absolute best. During daylight hours, the contrast between the bright blue sea and the colorful tulips is exceptionally beautiful, making it an ideal time for photography. We highly recommend checking the blooming status of the flowers before your visit to ensure you catch the peak display.
The primary way to enjoy the garden is through a leisurely stroll. During the tulip season, the local product fairs offer a wonderful opportunity to interact with the local culture through food and crafts. You can spend a peaceful time contemplating the history of the region while gazing out at the vast ocean and the historic monuments that stand as silent witnesses to the past.
Saraki Misaki is located along National Route 228. The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty and is a popular stop along scenic coastal driving routes in Hokkaido. You can enjoy a relaxing drive through the beautiful coastline of Kikonai Town, with the cape serving as a spectacular highlight of your journey.
Because the cape is exposed to the elements, it can become quite windy; we recommend wearing clothing that provides wind protection.
