The Sapporo Beer Museum is the oldest beer museum in Japan, telling the story of Sapporo Beer which has grown alongside the development of Hokkaido. The imposing red brick building, constructed during the Meiji era, is designated as a Hokkaido Heritage site, offering a visually stunning and culturally significant landscape. Inside, you will find significant technological artifacts, such as a massive copper kettle measuring 6.1 meters in diameter and approximately 10 meters in height, which was once used in the Sapporo brewery. The complex also includes the Sapporo Beer Garden, where you can enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere while dining on local specialties, providing a multi-dimensional understanding of Japanese beer culture.
This facility symbolizes the history of Sapporo Beer, which began with the Hokkaido development projects in 1876. The red brick architecture retains the profound dignity of the Meiji and Taisho eras, reflecting the atmosphere of a traditional brewery. The museum features several overwhelming exhibits. A standout is the giant copper malt boiling kettle used from 1965 to 2003, which is a vital piece of industrial history. On the 2nd floor, the 'Sapporo Gallery' presents the history of Japanese brewing through 12 themed booths, featuring era-specific advertisements. On the 3rd floor, a theater allows you to watch a documentary about 'Sapporo Seimugi-shu,' the first domestic beer born in the Meiji era. These exhibits highlight the site's importance as a modern industrial heritage site.
The museum is open year-round (except December 31st), and the building's appearance changes beautifully with the seasons. The red brick architecture is particularly photogenic against the lush greenery of summer or the serene snowscapes of winter. The adjacent Sapporo Beer Garden becomes lively during lunch and dinner hours. While museum tours generally run from 11:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30), please be mindful of the last order times if you plan to enjoy a meal or drinks. We recommend photographing the exterior during daylight hours before enjoying a meal in this historic space.
Beyond simple observation, the museum offers deep immersive experiences. The 'Premium Tour' is a special guided program led by a brand communicator. At the end of the tour, you can enjoy a tasting of the 'Replica Sapporo Seimugi-shu'—which recreates the original flavor from the founding days—alongside the modern classic 'Sapporo Black Label.' Additionally, at the 'Star Hall' on the 1st floor, you can taste incredibly fresh beer delivered directly from the brewery. For beer enthusiasts, tasting a brew within this historical context is a truly special experience.
Located in Higashi-ku, Sapporo, the museum is surrounded by historic buildings and lush greenery. The Sapporo Beer Garden is within walking distance, where you can enjoy beer paired with Genghis Khan (grilled mutton). The area is easily accessible via JR Miaoshi Station or the Higashi-ku Yakusho-mae Subway Station, making it a convenient hub for exploring Sappamente. It is a perfect area for a stroll, blending historical landscapes with modern urban functionality.
The museum is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring slopes and elevators, though some routes may involve stairs. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. If you participate in the Premium Tour or beer tasting, you MUST bring a valid photo ID for age verification. Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited for those under 20 or those who are pregnant/nursing. Payments can be made via cash or credit cards (VISA/MasterCard). Photography of the exhibits and exterior is permitted, but please be respectful of the artifacts. Pets are not allowed, except for service animals.
