Sanuki Kodomo no Kuni is the largest children's center in Kagawa Prefecture, located in Takamatsu City. Its most distinctive feature is its proximity to the Takamatsu Airport runway, allowing visitors to observe aircraft taking off and landing from a very close distance. The facility is designed to support the healthy physical and mental development of children through diverse equipment, including a planetarium, aircraft exhibitions, and various playground structures. It is a highly popular spot not only for families with children but also for aviation enthusiasts who wish to experience the thrill of watching planes up close.
The facility is operated by the Kagawa Prefecture Child and Youth Development Foundation. Its primary mission is to support the healthy growth of children and serve as a community hub for regional development. For many years, it has functioned as a vital center for experiential learning through play, providing a safe and educational environment for the local community's youth.
The facility is divided into several specialized areas. The East Wing area houses the YS-11 aircraft exhibition, where visitors can even explore the interior of the actual aircraft. The Space Plaza features a planetarium for celestial learning. The West Wing and other outdoor areas offer vast spaces such as the Cycle Center, lawn areas, mountain bike routes, and the Flying Plaza. Additionally, the center features a Kotoden Type 60 Electric Train No. 62 exhibition, providing a unique look at local railway history.
While the facility is open year-round, operating hours may vary by season. During the summer vacation period (July 21 to August 31), some days may have extended hours until 18:00 (specifically between August 13 and 16). The YS-11 aircraft exhibition is typically open for interior viewing on weekends, holidays, and during spring and summer breaks. For the best experience watching aircraft, it is recommended to check the flight schedules of Takamatsu Airport.
Visitors can engage in a wide range of activities. Outdoors, you can enjoy the cycling routes, mountain bike paths, and spacious lawn areas. Indoors, the facility offers educational experiences such as stargazing in the planetarium and exploring the aircraft and train exhibits. A cafe corner is also available on-site, providing light snacks and refreshments for a relaxing break.
Located immediately adjacent to Takamatsu Airport, the area is surrounded by aviation-related landmarks such as Sanuki Airport Park and Takayama Aviation Park. It is approximately a 35-minute drive from central Takamatsu City. Please note that the shuttle bus service that previously connected the airport to the facility was discontinued in 2016.
As there are many outdoor activities and large walking areas, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are highly recommended. Please be aware that most transactions are cash-based. While the facility offers basic amenities, it is advisable to check the official website for English-language availability. Photography may be restricted in certain exhibition areas. The facility is equipped with barrier-free accessibility, including wheelchair-friendly entrances and restrooms.
