Sanshiroshima is a unique natural site located in the Dogashima area of West Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, where you can witness the rare 'Tombolo phenomenon.' When the tide recedes, a temporary 'Sea Path' appears between the island (located about 200m offshore) and the mainland. This allows visitors to walk across the water, offering a mystical and unforgettable experience created by the rhythm of the ocean.
The West Izu coastline is renowned for its stunning scenery and rich marine ecosystem. The appearance of the path to Sanshiroshima is governed by the natural ebb and flow of the tides. Because this path only reveals itself under specific conditions, it has long been cherished as a place to feel the profound power and wonder of nature, symbolizing the natural beauty of the Izu Peninsula.
The greatest draw is undoubtedly the 'Sea Path' that emerges during low tide. Walking along the sandbar after the waves have receded is a special experience that feels far removed from daily life. Additionally, the surrounding tide pools are home to various marine life, making it an excellent spot for nature observation and discovering the small wonders of the sea.
The 'Sea Path' to Sanshiroshima primarily appears from March to September during low tide. The best chance to see a clearly defined path is during the spring tides (large tides), specifically within 1 to 1.5 hours before or after the lowest tide time. From October to February, the tide rarely recedes significantly during the day, so please be cautious. Spring (March to April) is an ideal season to enjoy this mysterious phenomenon alongside the beautiful seasonal nature of West Izu.
Local nature guides occasionally host 'Mysterious Experience Tours.' By joining a guided walk to Sanshiroshima or participating in a tide pool-learning session, you can gain a deeper understanding of marine life and natural cycles. Some tours may even offer perks such souvenirs or discounts for nearby sightseeing boats and facilities.
The area around Sanshiroshima offers many other attractions. You can enjoy sightseeing boat tours to see the famous 'Blue Cave' or visit the Izu Trick Art Museum, which are great for families. Furthermore, West Izu is famous for its many hot spring (onsen) facilities, making it the perfect place to relax after your nature walk.
When crossing to Sanshiroshima, you will be walking on rocky or sandy terrain. Because the ground can be wet and unstable, please bring sports sandals or marine shoes. Note that rubber flip-flops or standard beach sandals are not recommended due to safety concerns. Regarding parking, please use the free municipal parking lots (such as the Dogashima Park Parking) located along National Route 136. To protect the environment, please ensure you take all trash home with you and respect the natural surroundings.
