Sanno-ji Rice Terraces is a breathtaking landscape located on the northeastern slopes of Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, at an altitude of 300 meters. Recognized in 1999 as one of the '100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan,' this site features approximately 200 terraced paddy fields spread across a 19-hectare area. These fields, meticulously maintained by local farmers, serve as a precious cultural asset that preserves the traditional Japanese rural landscape for future generations.
The region has a long history deeply intertwined with agriculture. The area is also home to the 'Sanno-ji Kagura,' a traditional ritual dance designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture. This connection between the natural environment and the local community's way of life provides a profound historical context, as the local people continue to preserve this beautiful landscape through their daily agricultural practices.
The most striking feature is the sight of the terraced fields layered perfectly along the mountain's slope. Visitors can enjoy the harmonious relationship between the sky, the surrounding mountains, and the changing colors of the rice plants. The scenery is particularly spectacular during the seasons when the fields are filled with water, reflecting the sky, or when the rice ears turn a brilliant golden color.
The appearance of the terraces changes dramatically with the seasons. From spring to summer, you can witness the beautiful sight of the sky reflected in the water-filled paddies. From September to November, the landscape transforms into a sea of gold as the rice ripens toward harvest. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended, as the bright sunlight enhances the contrast between the blue sky and the vibrant green or golden hues of the fields, making it ideal for photography.
The primary purpose of visiting Sanno-ji Rice Terraces is to observe and appreciate the natural landscape. It is a perfect spot for a quiet stroll to feel the passage of time and the subtle shifts in the seasons. Additionally, visitors can gain insight into the local culture, such as the Kagura traditions, through the surrounding environment.
There are several scenic spots nearby to enjoy. 'Mineji' is located approximately 12 km away by car, and 'Ashiya Gorge Yamame-no-Sato' is about 26 km away. For breaks during your journey, 'Michi-no-Eki Kakeai-no-Sato' is a convenient rest area located roughly 23 km from the site.
