Sanko Cosmos Garden is a seasonal flower park located at the foot of Mt. Hachimen in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. Originally used as agricultural land, the area was transformed into one of Japan's largest cosmos gardens through a local revitalization initiative. The site covers approximately 15 hectares, with about 10 hectares dedicated to roughly 12 million cosmos flowers, primarily in shades of pink. The sight of this vast pink carpet spreading under the clear autumn sky is a truly unforgettable experience that draws visitors from all over.
The history of this garden dates back to 2007. It began when ten local farming cooperatives in the Sanko district of Nakatsu formed the "Japan's No. 1 Cosmos Garden Creation Group" with a shared vision to revitalize the community. By utilizing the seasonal transition of crops, they aimed to create a beautiful landscape that serves as a local symbol. Through the dedication of local residents, what was once simple farmland has evolved into a precious seasonal tourism resource, representing the strong community spirit of Nakatsu.
The greatest highlight is undoubtedly the immense expanse of color created by the 12 million cosmos flowers. The sight of pink blooms waving like a sea of flowers is the garden's signature view. Depending on the season, you may also see around 45,000 sunflowers planted across 1.5 hectares, offering a different botanical expression. The contrast between the silhouette of Mt. Hachimen in the background and the vibrant flowers in the foreground creates a stunningly picturesque landscape.
The peak season for Sanko Cosmos Garden is typically from October to mid-November. This is when the cosmos reach full bloom and the scenery is most spectacular.
