Sankeien is a magnificent 6-hectare 'Chikusan Ikesen Kaiyu-shiki' (artificial hill and pond stroll garden) created to commemorate the opening of Hiroshima Airport. The garden is designed to represent the three iconic landscapes of Hiroshima Prefecture: the mountains, the rural villages, and the sea. Each zone offers a distinct atmosphere, allowing visitors to experience the traditional beauty of Japanese gardens within a rich, natural environment.
The garden was developed to express the natural environment of the Hiroshima region alongside the opening of Hiroshima Airport. It incorporates elements of the mountain valleys and the Seto Inland Sea, dividing the space into three thematic areas: Mountain, Village, and Sea. Each area is meticulously crafted with artificial hills, ponds, and pathways that guide visitors through a curated landscape of natural beauty.
The garden features several breathtaking spots that utilize changes in elevation and water flow. In the 'Mountain' zone, you will find the 'Sandan no Taki' (Three-Stage Waterfall), where the soothing sound of cascading water creates a serene atmosphere. The 'Village' zone replicates a peaceful rural landscape with bamboo groves, plum orchards, and a central village pond. The 'Sea' zone features a vast pond inspired by the Seto Inland Sea, centered around the 'Shiomitei,' a beautiful traditional Sukiya-style building standing over the water. As you walk through the garden, the scenery constantly shifts, offering new perspectives at every step.
Sankeien offers a different face to every season. In March, the Plum Blossom Festival welcomes the spring. In May, the fresh greenery is complemented by the beauty of peonies and azaleas. The highlight is the 'Flower Festival' in June, where approximately 10,000 hydrangeas of 100 different varieties paint the garden in vibrant colors. In November, the 'Momiji (Maple) Festival' celebrates the stunning autumn colors. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to see the vivid colors of the flowers, or during the late afternoon to see how the light changes the landscape.
The primary way to enjoy Sankeien is through a leisurely stroll to admire the seasonal flora. During the June hydrangea festival, walking through the different zones provides a colorful backdrop for photography. Near the Shiomitei building, visitors can enjoy the harmonious view of traditional architecture reflected in the water and surrounded by lush greenery.
Sankeien is conveniently located right next to Hiroshima Airport. The surrounding area includes several spots for light snacks and rest, making it an ideal place for travelers to unwind before a flight or after arriving in Hiroshima. It is a perfect stop for those traveling through the Hiroshima region.
Because the garden features slopes and stone paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If visiting during the June hydrangea season, please bring a foldable umbrella or rain gear in case of sudden rain. While photography is permitted, please do not touch the plants or branches. When using tripods or selfie sticks, please be mindful of other visitors and avoid blocking the paths. Payments for individual admission can be made via cash or credit card.
