Sandankyo is a magnificent gorge approximately 16km long, located in the Shibaiki River basin of the Ota River system, spanning Akiota Town and Kitahiroshima Town in Hiroshima Prefecture. Designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in Japan, it is a representative landscape of the West Chugoku Mountains National Park and is celebrated among the '100 Best Sceneries of Japan' and '100 Best Autumn Foliage Spots.' The sight of the emerald-green clear streams, dynamic waterfalls, and steep, rugged cliffs offers a profound sense of the sublime beauty of nature.
The history of this area is closely tied to the early 20th century. In 1917 (Taisho 6), local photographer Kumaminami and elementary school teacher Saito Rosui began activities to promote the beauty of this gorge to the world, which is considered the year of its 'opening' to the public. While the name 'Sandankyo' is commonly thought to derive from the 'Three-Stage Falls' (Sandan-taki), there is also a theory that it was named by Kumaminami, referencing the 'San-ga and San-kyo' from the classical text 'Matsuo Drop Leaves Collection.' In 2017, celebrations were held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its opening.
Sandankyo boasts numerous breathtaking spots. The 'Five Great Views'—Mitsutaki Falls, Sandan Falls, Kurobuchi, Sarutobi, and Nidan Falls—are iconic symbols of the gorge's beauty. Additionally, the 'Seven Views,' which include Ryunokuchi and Ryumon, are highly renowned.
For instance, at 'Ryunokuchi,' the river has eroded the bedrock into a winding path resembling a dragon, offering a powerful spectacle of roaring water and splashing mist. At 'Gurunose and Toiwa,' the massive 60-meter-high Toiwa rock tower stands majestically, accompanied by a 150-year-old cedar tree that exemplifies the resilience of nature. Other spots like 'Myotobuchi' and the 'Sister Falls' also provide enchanting views of the flowing water.
Sandankyo reveals a different face with every season. It is particularly famous as a premier autumn foliage spot, where the surrounding mountains turn vibrant colors, enhancing the colors of the gorge. From spring to summer, the abundant water volume and the emerald-green clarity of the stream provide a refreshing sense of natural energy. We recommend planning your visit according to the season to experience these diverse natural expressions.
The primary way to enjoy Sandankyo is by observing its natural topography. While walking along the trails, you can observe the complex geological formations created by faults and fracture zones. For example, near the Gurunose area, the path offers a thrilling view as if you are being drawn into the valley. Hiking and walking through this landscape to witness the intricate shapes of nature is the main activity here.
The area around Sandankyo includes other scenic spots like Taishakyo Gorge, part of the rich natural environment of the West Chugoku Mountains National Park. Akiota Town also offers various local resources that allow visitors to enjoy the surrounding landscapes even after their walk through the gorge.
Since you will be walking through a natural landscape, comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes (such as trekking shoes) are essential. Please prepare carefully as there may be unstable footing or areas near water.
