Sandanbeki is a spectacular scenic spot in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, characterized by a continuous line of dramatic cliffs approximately 60m high. The rugged rock-faces facing the Pacific Ocean create a powerful landscape, offering a sense of awe. The area is well-equipped with facilities that allow visitors to experience both nature and relaxation, including an observation deck to view the vast horizon, a sea cave located 36m below sea level, and a free foot bath to soothe your feet.
The area around Sandanbeki is steeped in local legend. The sea cave beneath the cliffs is said to have once served as a hiding place for the Kumano Navy (Kumano Suigun). Additionally, the area holds a certain historical sentiment, such as the 'Kuchibeni Monument' (Lipstick Monument), which tells a story of a tragic love from the past, adding a layer of romantic mystery to the natural scenery.
There are several must-see spots at Sandanbeki. First, the 'Sandanbeki Observation Deck' offers a perfect vantage point to photograph the 60m cliffs and the endless Pacific Ocean. Second, you can take an elevator down to the 'Sandanbeki Sea Cave' (36m below ground) to experience the thunderous sound of waves crashing against the rocks. Another unique feature is 'Sudden Rock,' a distinctive rock formation that appeared after a typhoon in 2018, showcasing the raw power of nature. Furthermore, the area is known as a 'Holy Land for Lovers,' featuring heart-shaped monuments and places where you can hang love locks.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, a clear sunny day is highly recommended to see the striking contrast between the deep blue sea and the white sea spray. During sunset, it is highly recommended to enjoy a drink at a cliffside cafe while watching the sun dip below the horizon. The sea cave offers a dynamic experience regardless of the time of day, as the echoing sounds of the waves provide a powerful connection to nature's energy.
There are plenty of ways to engage your senses here. You can explore the history of the area while listening to the waves deep inside the cave, or simply enjoy the view from the observation deck. For relaxation, the 'Sandanbeki Foot Bath' allows you to unwind while gazing at the ocean. Along the 'Sandan Street,' you can enjoy local seafood street food like grilled turban shells or visit 'Gake Cafe' to enjoy a beverage with a view. Visitors can also enjoy exploring the area via bicycle.
The area around Sandanbeki is rich with other attractions, including the famous Shirahama Onsen (Hot Springs). Nearby, you can find 'Monjudo,' related to the Saigoku Sanjusankasho pilgrimage, and beautiful Japanese gardens with flower decorations. The local shopping street near the parking area offers various local delicacies and souvenirs.
Because the terrain near the cliffs can be uneven, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. While elevators and stairs are available for the cave and observation deck, please be prepared for changing weather conditions.
