According to the 'Izumo no Kuni Fudoki' (8th century), a myth known as 'Kunibiki' tells of a deity who used Mount Sanbe and Mount Daisen as stakes to stabilize and unify the land. Additionally, the unique landscape of the mountain's grasslands is preserved through the traditional practice of 'Hi-ire' (controlled burning), which is used to encourage the growth of fresh, new grass every year.
There are several unique spots to explore at Mount Sanbe. One highlight is 'Himenogai-ke' located at the northern foot, where thousands of beautiful Siberian irises bloom in early summer. Another fascinating site is the Sanbe Kozahara Buried Forest Park, where ancient trees, buried during past volcanic eruptions, remain standing in their original positions. For hikers, you can traverse various peaks or descend into the Muro crater. A mountain hut, 'Sanbe Chojo Hut,' is also available near the summit for safety.

Many hiking routes even begin near the hot spring areas, allowing you to seamlessly combine a vigorous hike with a relaxing soak.
