Sanaga-tsutsumi is a scenic riverside embankment path located along the Sanaga River in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. During the spring season, the area transforms into a breathtaking landscape where approximately 650 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in full pink splendor, set against a vast, vibrant field of yellow rapeseed flowers. This striking contrast between the pink blossoms and the yellow flowers makes it a beloved destination for those seeking to feel the true arrival of spring.
The Sanaga River is a secondary river system flowing through the Higashi-Mikawa region of eastern Aichi Prefecture. Due to its geological characteristics, the river's flow can vary significantly depending on rainfall. The current shape and infrastructure of the riverbanks were largely shaped by river improvements and developments during the 1940s and 1950s, a period when the Toyokawa Naval Arsenal was established. Today, the area maintains a beautiful harmony with nature, and serves a cultural role in the community through local events such as the "Sanaga Sakura Walk Rally."
The greatest highlight is the long stretch of cherry blossom trees lining both sides of the embankment. Because the cherry blossom tunnel extends for about 4km, visitors can enjoy ever-changing perspectives and views as they walk along the path. The most iconic sight is the stunning color contrast: the soft pink of the cherry blossoms dancing above the bright, dense yellow of the rapeseed flowers. The well-maintained walking paths allow visitors to enjoy a relaxing time while listening to the gentle flow of the river.
The most beautiful time to visit Sanaga-tsutsumi is from mid-March to early April, coinciding with the peak blooming period of the cherry blossoms. During this window, you can witness both the cherry blossoms and the rapeseed flowers in full bloom simultaneously. We highly recommend visiting during the daytime under a clear blue sky, as the bright sunlight makes the pink and yellow colors appear most vivid and photogenic.

The area around Sanaga-tsutsumi features several spots that showcase the culture of Toyokawa City. Near the confluence of the Sanaga and Obikawa rivers, you can find Fureai Park and the unique "Deai Bridge," which features a design inspired by a boat. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers, as the embankment path follows the natural terrain. Since the weather can be variable during the transition into spring, bringing a light jacket for temperature regulation is a good idea.
