The Ogita Rice Terraces are situated in the high-altitude plateau of Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, at an elevation of 820 meters. True to its name, the landscape is defined by 16 rice terraces arranged in a distinctive fan-shaped formation. This site is highly valued for its historical and cultural significance, having been selected as one of 'Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces' and designated as an 'Important Cultural Landscape' by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The geometric arrangement of the terrace ponds, nestled within the natural contours of the land, creates a harmonious and breathtaking view.
This region has a long history of close coexistence between agriculture and the natural environment. The structure of these terraces is a testament to human ingenuity, utilizing the fan-shaped topography to maximize the use of limited land. The recognition of this site as a top-tier cultural landscape proves that it is more than just a beautiful view; it is a preserved piece of traditional Japanese rural heritage that has been protected by local communities for generations.
The most striking feature is the geometric interplay between the 16 rice terraces and the three prominent cedar trees. You can easily combine a visit here with other nearby hot spring resorts and natural sightseeing spots.
As this is an outdoor scenic area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare for weather changes by bringing rain gear or sun protection as needed. While there are maintained paths, the terrain includes steps and slopes, so please watch your footing. If you plan to use nearby facilities, please carry cash, as some-places may not accept cards.
