Sakuya Konohana Kan is a magnificent indoor botanical garden located within the Flower Expo Memorial Park (Tsurumi Ryokuchi) in Osaka. It was originally constructed as the pavilion for the 1990 International Horticultural Exposition. The facility boasts one of Japan's largest glasshouse structures, covering a floor area of 6,890m², and houses approximately 5,500 species and 15,000 plants. The striking exterior, composed of about 5,000 glass panels, was designed to evoke the image of water lilies floating on a surface.
The name of the facility was chosen through a public competition. It is derived from a classical poem found in the 'Kokin Wakashu' (an ancient Japanese poetry anthology), specifically the 'Naniwazu no Uta' which celebrates the blooming of flowers. Construction began in 1987, and the facility became a symbol of international horticultural excellence upon its completion in 1990. The architectural design, characterized by its sophisticated use of glass, was created by Nikken Sekkei and Rantech Planning Office.

Because the collection spans tropical, arid, and alpine environments, the botanical displays change beautifully depending on the season. To deepen your experience, you can join a 'Flower Tour' led by expert staff, which is conducted three times a day to provide detailed insights into the plant life.
Beyond simple observation, visitors can participate in the guided 'Flower Tours' to learn about plant ecology and unique characteristics. The facility also features the 'Flower Hall,' a versatile space used for various exhibitions and musical performances.
Located within the Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park, the garden is surrounded by scenic walking paths and other attractions like 'Aoi Park' and the 'Tower of Life.' The park offers a perfect setting for a relaxing stroll after your visit. The garden is easily accessible via a short walk from Tsurumi Ryokuchi Station on the Osaka Metro Nagahori Tsurumidori Line.
