Sakurayama Park is a beautiful park located near the summit of a mountain at an altitude of 591m in Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture. It is officially designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument, and is also recognized as one of the 'Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan.' The most unique feature of this park is the 'Fuyuzakura' (Winter Cherry Blossoms), which bloom at a different time than the typical spring season. The vast grounds are home to approximately 7,000 cherry trees, including both spring varieties and the rare winter-blooming species, providing a different and enchanting landscape throughout the seasons.
The area was once known as 'Kokuzora-yama.' The history of the park's development began in 1908 (Meiji 41) when the local village head and residents planted cherry and maple trees to commemorate the victory in the Russo-Japanese War. Around 1916 (Taisho 5), some of the planted cherry trees began to exhibit the characteristic of blooming in winter. In 1937 (Showa 12), the site was designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument. Furthermore, the local history is preserved in the 'Jomo Karuta' poetry, where the 'Sa' card specifically highlights the famous winter cherry blossoms of this region.
Sakurayama Park is divided into three main areas: the 1st Plaza (Japanese Garden), the 2nd Plaza (Exhibition Garden), and the 3rd Plaza (Event Plaza). The most striking highlight is the winter cherry blossoms visible from late November to early December. During this period, visitors can witness the incredibly rare sight of cherry blossoms blooming simultaneously with the vibrant autumn foliage. Due to its high altitude, there are also several scenic viewpoints scattered throughout the park where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The landscape changes beautifully with every season. In spring, the Yoshino cherry blossoms are in full bloom, while from early summer to autumn, you can enjoy the lush greenery and colorful autumn leaves. The most notable time to visit is the winter cherry blossom season from late November to early December. Seeing cherry blossoms bloom during such low temperatures is a rare experience, making it a perfect time for a stroll amidst the autumn colors. The park features well-maintained lawns, Japanese gardens, and exhibition gardens. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to enjoy the changing light and shadows across the scenery.
The park offers several well-maintained walking paths and hiking trails. You can choose a route based on your fitness level and goals, such as the approximately 35-minute walk from the 1st parking lot through the summit to the 3rd Plaza, or a quick 6-minute stroll to the observation deck. Additionally, the surrounding area offers seasonal fruit-picking experiences, with tangerine orchards at the foot of the mountain and apple orchards on the mid-slope, allowing you to enjoy the local harvest.
There are many spots connected to nature around the park. At the foot of the mountain, you can enjoy seasonal tangerines at local orchards, and apple orchards are located on the mid-slope. One popular hiking route leads toward the Yashio Onsen area, allowing you to plan an itinerary where you can relax in a hot spring after your hike and exercise. The surrounding environment is rich in natural beauty and local charm.
If you plan to use the hiking trails or walking paths, sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothing are essential. We highly recommend sneakers or hiking boots, as some paths near the summit can be uneven. Depending on the season, please prepare warm clothing to deal with temperature changes. As the park is a public natural space, please be mindful of environmental protection by taking your trash home and respecting the plants and trees.
