Sakura Pass (Sakura Toge) is a renowned destination for Oyamazakura (mountain cherry blossoms), located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters in Kitashiobara Village, Fukushima Prefecture. With about 3,000 cherry trees in full bloom, the entire pass transforms into a magnificent sea of pink during the spring. A particularly striking feature of this location is the unique scenery where the delicate pink blossoms coexist with the lingering white snow from the winter season. It is widely known as a spot where visitors can deeply feel the transition of the seasons amidst a rich natural environment.
This area has been carefully developed and preserved as a premier cherry blossom viewing site. Historically, the planting of these trees was often linked to local commemorative events, leading to the current landscape of thousands of Oyamazakura trees. By covering the mountain slopes with these blossoms, the area serves a vital cultural role—not just as a scenic viewpoint, but as a way to preserve the local natural environment and pass down the tradition of appreciating seasonal beauty.
The greatest attraction is the breathtaking color gradient created by the 3,000 Oyamazakura trees. The view shifts through various shades of light pink, deep pink, and white, offering an immersive experience where your entire field of vision is enveloped in blossoms. Furthermore, due to the high altitude, the contrast between the vibrant flowers and the surrounding mountains (often still covered in snow) is spectacular. On clear spring days, the colorful mountain slopes look exceptionally vivid and bright.
The peak season for cherry blossoms is typically from mid-April to late April. While the exact timing can vary depending on weather and temperature, visiting during this window ensures the most spectacular views. We recommend visiting during the daytime when the bright sunlight makes the colors of the blossoms appear most vibrant. Additionally, if you visit during the early spring, you may encounter the rare and precious sight of cherry blossoms blooming alongside patches of snow.
The primary way to enjoy this area is through a peaceful walk through nature. You can stroll along the paths winding through the cherry tree-lined slopes to feel the changing seasons. It is a highly popular destination for photography enthusiasts looking to capture the stunning landscapes. The area is also an excellent scenic driving route, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful views directly from your vehicle as you navigate the mountain pass.
Sakura Pass is located within the popular Urabandai tourism area. It is easily accessible by car, approximately 40 minutes from the Aizu-Wakamatsu IC on the Ban-etsu Expressway. The surrounding area features various amenities, including local restaurants, cafes, accommodation facilities, and roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki). Since these local spots can become quite crowded during peak seasons, we recommend checking local dining information in advance to ensure a smooth trip.
It is recommended to carry cash, as you may need to pay small cooperation fees for parking or at local facilities. Please check local conditions regarding the availability of credit cards or IC cards.
While some signs and facilities in the surrounding tourist areas may have English descriptions, most basic information and local services are primarily provided in Japanese.

Because the pass is located at an altitude of 800m, temperatures can remain quite low even in spring. Please bring layers or a warm jacket to adjust to the temperature, and wear comfortable walking shoes for your stroll.
Photography is freely allowed for enjoying the scenery. However, please be considerate of other visitors and avoid obstructing paths while taking photos.
Due to the natural mountainous terrain, there are some uneven surfaces and slopes. If you are using a wheelchair or a stroller, please check the local conditions in advance.
