Sakaijo Castle Ruins Park is a prefectural historical site located in Bando City, Ibaraki Prefecture. It marks the site of 'Sakaijo,' a strategic stronghold for samurai during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. Today, the park is a beautifully maintained space where visitors can truly feel the presence of the past. The vast grounds (approx. 63,000 m²) preserve original earthen walls (dorui) and moats, offering a profound sense of historical weight. Based on meticulous archaeological research, the park features faithful reconstructions of wooden structures, including watchtowers (yagura), the main hall (shuden), and a two-story watchtower, inviting visitors to step back into the era of the samurai.
The history of Sakaijo began with the rule of the Sakai clan. In 1536, the site was attacked by the Hojo clan of Odawara, after which it became a vital base for the Hojo clan's expansion into Northern Kanto. In 1577, records show the castle was reinforced with advanced techniques brought from Fujisawa. The location was strategically critical, situated on the borders of powerful forces like the Hitachi Satake, Yuki, and Tagaya clans. Following the fall of the Hojo clan during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Odawara campaign in 1590, the castle was abandoned, yet its historical significance remains highly regarded today.
The park is filled with reconstructed buildings that bring history to life. The watchtower gate (yaguramon), wooden bridges, the two-story watchtower, and the main hall are essential for understanding traditional castle structures. Additionally, the West Nino-maru area features relocated or reconstructed elements from other sites, such as the Yakuimon gate from Sekiyado Castle and the foundation stones of the Koga Castle study room, offering a diverse look at historical architecture. Another famous spot is the 'Kane-bori Pond.' This pond is steeped in legend, said to be the site where the family of the lord, Sakai Tsuneshige, met their end, adding a layer of tragic mystery to your visit.
The park offers beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. In spring, you can enjoy a stroll amidst blooming cherry blossoms. The lush greenery and seasonal flowers provide a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation. Visiting during bright daylight hours is ideal for exploring the interior of the reconstructed buildings and observing the intricate architectural details of the Sengoku era.
