Sakai Bato Park is located on a high vantage point overlooking the Sakai Waterway in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture. Historically, this site served as a strategic defense point known as the "Tottori no Bato" (Tottori's Battery). Today, it is a beloved spot where visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of a port town alongside breathtaking scenery. The park holds significant historical value, having been designated as a national historical site in July 1988 due to its artillery ruins. It was one of the first batteries constructed in the San'in region, serving as a vital defensive point. In 1991, a white, wooden-style hexagonal lighthouse was reconstructed as a symbol of the local port town. This lighthouse plays a crucial role in preserving and communicating the local history and culture to modern visitors.
The park is filled with historical remnants and scenic beauty. A standout feature is the white lighthouse situated to overlook the sea, which creates a nostalgic and iconic atmosphere characteristic of Japanese coastal towns. Additionally, the park is home to approximately 240 cherry trees, which form a magnificent tunnel of blossoms in the spring. This seasonal beauty, combined with the historical ruins, makes the park a captivating destination throughout the year.
The park's character changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring (late March to early April), the approximately 240 cherry trees reach full bloom, creating a spectacular pink landscape. During this period, local cherry blossom festivals may be held. At night, the atmosphere becomes even more magical; around 150 lanterns are sometimes installed, creating a dreamy scene alongside the illuminated lighthouse. While daytime offers clear views of the sea, the evening provides a deeply emotional and atmospheric experience.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while contemplating the historical artillery ruins and the reconstructed lighthouse. Thanks to its elevated location, the park offers an unobstructed view of the Sakai Waterway and the Sakai Waterway Bridge. Walking through this space, where nature and history intertwine, provides a serene escape from the bustle of daily life.
Sakai Bato Park is located near Sakaiminato, a port famous for having one of the highest fishing catches in Japan. The surrounding area allows you to experience the rich fishing culture and coastal landscapes. The park is easily accessible, located approximately a 5-minute drive from JR Sakaiminato Station.
