Saişouin is a historic Buddhist temple located in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Its most iconic feature is the magnificent five-story pagoda, often hailed as the most beautiful pagoda in the Tohoku region. For instance, the Nio statues housed at the Nio-mon gate recently underwent a significant deconstruction and restoration process. During this work, a major historical discovery was made: the statues were identified as being in the style of the 'Shichijo Busshi Ryu Ukon' school from Kyoto. Furthermore, the restoration of the colors of the Nio statues to their appearance from approximately 400 years ago allows visitors to witness the authentic aesthetic of that era. Thus, Saişouin serves as a living museum of regional history and the evolution of Buddhist art.
There are several essential sights to experience at Saişouin. First and foremost is the towering five-story pagoda, the symbol of the temple. Next is the Nio-mon gate at the entrance, which houses the A-un Nio statues; these statues have recently been restored to showcase their vibrant, original colors. Additionally, the temple houses a rare Buddhist statue known as 'Nekotsuki Fudo Myoo,' which is associated with a local legend involving a cat, making it a fascinating point of interest for visitors.
Saişouin offers a different visage depending on when you visit. In spring (April to May), you can feel the gentle transition of the seasons alongside the budding nature. Summer (June to August) brings lush greenery to the temple grounds. In autumn (September to November), the yellow ginkgo leaves and colorful foliage create a stunning contrast against the vermilion pagoda. In winter (December to March), the pagoda stands elegantly amidst a serene snowscape; on clear days, the bright red structure looks particularly striking against the white snow. The Tsugaru Castle Nebuta Village is also nearby, about 1.6 km away (roughly a 21-minute walk), where you can experience traditional local culture. Combining these-sites into a single itinerary will allow for a much more fulfilling sightseeing experience.
As the temple grounds contain gravel paths and some steps, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please choose clothing appropriate for the season.
