Shasui Falls is a breathtaking natural landmark located in Yamakita Town, Ashigarakami District, Kanagawa Prefecture. Fed by the Takizawa River, a tributary of the Sakawa River, this site is honored as one of the 'Top 100 Waterfalls of Japan' and 'Top 100 Water Sources,' recognized for its exceptional water purity and scenic beauty. The name 'Shasui' refers to 'pure fragrant water' in esoteric Buddhist terminology, underscoring its long history as a sacred site. The waterfall consists of three distinct tiers: the first tier (69m drop), the second tier (16m drop), and the third tier (29m drop), each offering a unique and powerful expression of nature.
The area holds deep spiritual significance; it is said that the famous monk Monk Bungaku performed rigorous 100-day ascetic training (takigyo) at this site during the Kamakura period. Near the falls, you will find the 'Takifudo Falls Deity' (Ana Fudo), an object of worship believed to have been enshrined by Monk Bungaku. Every year on the fourth Sunday of July, the 'Shasui Falls Festival' is held. This local tradition features the rhythmic sounds of Shasui Taiko drumming and a sacred fire festival at the Takifudo shrine, serving as a community ritual to pray for health and protection.
The most striking view is looking up at the powerful cascades from the vermilion bridge. The first tier, with its massive 69-meter drop, creates a sense of awe and refreshment against the backdrop of deep green forests. While the base of the falls is currently inaccessible for safety reasons, visitors can experience the full majesty of the falls from the newly developed walking paths and observation terraces. Additionally, historical stone monuments near the left side of the falls add a touch of cultural depth to the natural landscape.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. From spring to summer, the vibrant fresh greenery provides a stunning contrast to the white water, creating a refreshing atmosphere. During the hot summer months, the area is a perfect spot to feel the cooling power of negative ions and natural energy. In autumn, the landscape is painted with colorful foliage, and in winter, the falls can be seen under a serene blanket of snow, offering a different aesthetic each time you visit.
Visitors can enjoy the 'Kawamura Castle Ruins - Shasui Falls Hiking Course,' which allows for a scenic walk through the forest. The area features well-maintained paths and stairs, making it easy to immerse yourself in the fresh mountain air. The observation terrace is an ideal place to pause, listen to the rhythmic sound of the falling water, and simply surrender to the tranquility of the moment.
The area is surrounded by lush forests, making it an excellent environment for nature observation and hiking. Since Yamakita Town is dotted with various historical sites, you can easily combine a visit to the falls with a broader cultural and natural exploration route.
