The Saio Matsuri is a traditional festival held over two days during the first weekend of June in Meiwa Town, Mie Prefecture. The centerpiece is the 'Saio Gunko' (Saio Procession), which recreates the historical ritual of the Saio (an unmarried imperial princess) traveling from the capital to the Saio-no-miya in Ise. People dressed in authentic Heian-period attire bring this ancient scene to life.
The festival is held in honor of the historical Saio-no-miya that once existed in Meiwa. The 'Saio' refers to an unmarried imperial princess serving the Ise Grand Shrine. The procession format seen today, based on rigorous historical research of the Heian period, has been a staple since 1989. It is recognized as one of the 'Three Great Saio Processions' in Japan, alongside those in Shiga and Kyoto.
The greatest highlight is the 'Saio Gunko' procession. You will see the Saio riding a Nokanori carriage in a multi-layered Junihitoe kimono, accompanied by court ladies, officials, and guards in traditional attire. With approximately 120 participants moving through the historical sites, the scene feels like a living Heian-period picture scroll.
The festival takes place during the first weekend of June. Day 1 features the 'Saio Market' with local specialties and a pre-festival ceremony. Day 2 includes daytime attractions and the main Saio Gunko procession following the 'Misogi no Gi' (purification ritual). Please note that the event may be canceled in the event of rain.
Beyond watching the procession, visitors can enjoy the 'Saio Market,' where you can discover local products and the vibrant atmosphere of the town. The first night's pre-festival sets the stage for the grand event the following day.
The festival takes place within the designated historical site of the Saio-no-miya ruins. The route begins at Saiku Heian-no-mori, passes through the Uezono Lawn Plaza, and heads toward the Saio Historical Museum, making it a perfect area for cultural exploration.
Since the festival is held in June, we recommend preparing for the heat with hats, drinks, and parasols. As most activities are outdoors, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
For the Saio Market and local stalls, carrying cash is highly recommended. Credit cards or IC cards may not be accepted at all vendor locations.

No advance reservation is required to watch the procession. However, please check official information regarding weather-related cancellations.
Photography of the procession is permitted, but please be respectful and ensure you do not obstruct the path of other spectators.
