Saigonomodashi no Matsu Park is a high-altitude park located in Matsushima Town, Miyagi Prefecture, offering a spectacular view of Matsushima Bay, which is celebrated as one of the Three Views of Japan. The park is famous for its large, historic pine trees and an observation deck that provides an unobstructed view of the many islands floating in the bay and the beautiful coastline. A cafe is also located within the park, allowing visitors to relax while soaking in the natural beauty.
The name of the park is rooted in a legend involving the famous poet Saigyo Hoshi. It is said that while traveling through various provinces, Saigyo engaged in a Zen dialogue (zenmondo) with a young boy under a large pine tree in this area. Having lost the debate, Saigolo reportedly abandoned his journey to Matsushima. This historical and poetic connection gives the park its name, "Saigonomodashi no Matsu" (The Pine of Saigyo's Return).
The centerpiece of the park is the observation deck, which provides a bird's-eye view of the entire Matsushima Bay. From this vantage point, you can witness the unique beauty of the many small islands (tashima-bi) that characterize the area. Additionally, the park is a renowned spot for cherry blossom viewing; in spring, the pink blossoms blend beautifully with the blue sea and green pine trees, creating a truly unforgettable landscape.
Visiting during the spring is highly recommended to witness the cherry blossoms in full bloom. The scenery changes beautifully with each season, offering different moods for photographers and nature lovers. The onsite cafe, "le Roman," operates from 11:00 to 17:00, with food service ending at 15:00. Please note that the cafe is closed on Tuesdays.
At the cafe "le Roman," located within the park, you can enjoy freshly brewed coffee and homemade sweets. It is the perfect place to spend a slow afternoon, enjoying the panoramic view of Matsushima Bay with a warm drink in hand. The combination of the scent of coffee and the sea breeze offers a deeply relaxing experience.
The park is located near Matsushima Coast Station and the central Matsushima sightseeing district. A dedicated parking lot for the park is available, accommodating up to 60 standard cars and 6 large buses. There are also several nearby paid parking lots (such as Matsushima Koen Dai-ichi through Dai-go) that can be used when exploring the broader Matsushima area.
